Traveling to the U.S. after approval

Hello everyone,

I have a situation that hopefully someone can shed light on. My fiance is immigrating to the U.S. next month. We were looking into getting a one-way ticket for him directly through KLM. When I called and asked about the one-way ticket, I was told that my fiance would have to show evidence of enough monetary support to "justify" a one-way ticket. I can't understand this. Shouldn't his visa be enough to justify purchasing a ticket? Why get a round-trip when he has no intentions of returning to Ghana in the near future? I submitted all the required paperwork, including sworn affidavits of support from both myself and a joint-sponsor in order for him to be approved for the visa, so why should KLM be concerned with how much money he will be bringing with him? When I asked them how much money would be acceptable, the agent could not give me any specific details! My fiance will be bringing money with him, but what if that amount is not acceptable to the agents at the airport? The agent told me that he would not be allowed to board the plane if he is unable to show the accepted amount of money. Anyone heard of this or have any advice on what we should do?

Thanks,

Jamie

I have heard of this, since the US CBP can ask for the person to show enough money to support the trip, however, with the K-1 visa in hand, that should trump this "requirement" from the airline.

Perhaps a different airline is in order?

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

This airline rep apparently to be a bit confused about the process. If the airline allows you to fly on a one-way ticket without the proper visa and you are turned away at immigration, they airline may be responsible for flying you back at their cost. Since a valid visa is present, I don't see why they care about how much money the passenger has though. You might want to call and talk to someone else or, as stated before, try another airline.

The original poster is worried about being turned away at the airline check-in counter. If KLM doesn't care about a valid "immigrant" visa and still requires the traveler to show sufficient funds for some bizarre reason, he/she is better off going with a different airline.

No need for this. Buy whatever is cheaper. It is not unusual for a round trip ticket to be cheaper, by the way. He has a K-1 visa for permanent residency. Uninformed and untrained people all over the world get types of visas confused and then apply their own "made up rules". You will have the same situation here with the SS office and the DMV. Best study up on the rules yourself (this is a good place to do it) and do not let ignorant people deter you. If KLM doesn't want his business plenty of other airlines will take your money and smile about it.

I am so confused and worried right now. I just called KLM again to see if this really is their policy or if the person I talked to before just didn't know what they were talking about. I was told again by another representative that this is true, that he will have to show proof of sufficient funds to board the flight. I asked if this applied to just the tourist visa or to all kinds, and was told that it was applicable to all kinds of visas. I asked why this was the case because my SO had been approved to immigrate and I had submitted the affidavits of support as required and was told that him being approved for a visa had no relevance at all. I asked if this was just a KLM policy and was told no, that this was a mandate by the U.S. government!

I have no idea as to what to do. They could not tell me how much money was needed to present at the airport. This seems to be so crazy, I just don't understand why they would care how much money he has, as long as he has the visa, passport, and money to buy the ticket. What gives??

Please help!

Go to another airline. It sounds like they are confused. Especially since you asked them for details regarding the amount of money required and they could not provide any numbers. My wife just did this a couple months ago w/ no problem on Korean Air.
