Hello everyone,

I have a situation that hopefully someone can shed light on. My fiance will be coming early next month. We were looking into getting a one-way ticket for him directly through KLM. When I called and asked about the one-way ticket, I was told that my fiance would have to show evidence of enough monetary support to "justify" a one-way ticket. I can't understand this. Shouldn't his visa be enough to justify purchasing a ticket? Why get a round-trip when he has no intentions of returning to Ghana in the near future? I submitted all the required paperwork, including sworn affidavits of support from both myself and a joint-sponsor in order for him to be approved for the visa, so why should KLM be concerned with how much money he will be bringing with him? When I asked them how much money would be acceptable, the agent could not give me any specific details! My fiance will be bringing money with him, but what if that amount is not acceptable to the agents at the airport? The agent told me that he would not be allowed to board the plane if he is unable to show the accepted amount of money. Anyone heard of this or have any advice on what we should do?

Thanks,

Jamie

Hi

Airlines are normally fined by respective governments if they do carry passengers who have no proper documents. For that reason , ticket agents esp in Africa have to check your visa before selling you a ticket.

If you tell the ticketing agent you have an immigrant visa, student visa who is not returning soon and show them

Proof when buying the ticket you should be fine. That rule applies to tourist visa.

All the same return tickets from africa are fairly cheap compared to one way tickets in my case the difference was

300 dollars and we decided to buy 2 way ticket. The option is yours, goodluck

I am so confused and worried right now. I just called KLM again to see if this really is their policy or if the person I talked to before just didn't know what they were talking about. I was told again by another representative that this is true, that he will have to show proof of sufficient funds to board the flight. I asked if this applied to just the tourist visa or to all kinds, and was told that it was applicable to all kinds of visas. I asked why this was the case because my SO had been approved to immigrate and I had submitted the affidavits of support as required and was told that him being approved for a visa had no relevance at all. I asked if this was just a KLM policy and was told no, that this was a mandate by the U.S. government!

I have no idea as to what to do. They could not tell me how much money was needed to present at the airport. This seems to be so crazy, I just don't understand why they would care how much money he has, as long as he has the visa, passport, and money to buy the ticket. What gives??

Please help!

You can buy a one way ticket. His visa stamp is documents that he is supported here in the us. His visa is for immigration purposes so they know he might not return.

The airline people at Kotoka know all about the different types of visas and that an immigrant visa on a one-way flight is different form a tourist.

My husband had a one-way (back when North American Airlines was flying Accra to NY) and we had no problems getting on the plane.

You could always buy a separate return ticket (fully refundable type) if you don't want to be worried. Then return it for refund once he's in the US. It would put a couple (or a few!) thousand on your credit card, but it might be worth the peace of mind?

This sounds like ignorance on the part of the ticket agent. The only thing I can think is that it is a K-1 visa which isn't actually an immigrant visa. But it is much more likely that the ticket agent doesn't know what he or she is talking about. Is there another branch of KLM you can call?
