Thanks primahen, we downloaded filmonHD and it works great for watching the basic 1-5 channels. :  Now I just have to remember to tune in 5 hours earlier than I did in the UK to catch up with Eastenders and Corrie (yes, I am sad).

Did you have to pay a subscription fee?

Does this mean I will be able to watch Strictly on Saturday?? I am beside myself with grief over it!! I subscribed to UKNova but am particularly thick when it comes to the internet and can't figure it out.....or is filmonHD straight-forward with no strings attached?

I didn't pay any fees.

I just clicked on 'Register for Free' after downloading and made a username/password. Then after installing it, the player came up. You can click on the different channels and they come through within seconds. I've only checked some of the 1-5 (they all appear to be free) but I imagine the others in the list are only if you pay.

Slingbox is good.....

I got sent a programme the other day, which you just install onto your pc and if you have vlc set up as your video player, you can pick any UK TV channel to watch live.

I'll dig it out - seems to work with most of the channels almost all the time. I watched the England game the other day on ITV.

EDIT: Here you go......the email I got in the first instance

Thought you might like this, this bod has written a programme that allows you to watch 19 UK channels online, no problem

http://www.myp2pforum.eu/live-tv/41045-british-tv.html

You need to have VLC as your default player

Then download the zip file from the myP2P link, extract the .exe file and copy it to your VLC programme file (I think it just needs to be on the same drive, but I stuck it there anyhow, then copied a direct link to desktop)

Open, type in the Channel number from the menu, hit enter and voila.

Thanks this works a treat. Its gonna be handy for football and for other stuff now and again and it works a treat too.

Yeah, I've heard of those but I purposely have not utilized them because I was told by a friend (who works in IT security) that you can be traced when you use those sites. I'd love the freedom of the services but I'm a big 'ol fraidy cat. Can anyone explain how safe it is to use them?

OK, edited to add that I just closed the player and re-opened it and it seems to be fine for now. We've been sitting here running it for about two hours and BBC 2 stopped playing and the words 'subscription expired' came up on the screen. In the side bar subscription prices were listed. I scrolled up and down the other channels and they were still loading and watchable. So I'm not sure what could be going on but - the prices listed were $10 a month or $100 a year if you wanted the service without the 'adult' channels.

If the 'free registration' ends up being limited and the player shuts down, I think we'll go ahead and subscribe. Seems quite a lot of fun to watch UK TV live and 10 bucks a month is a damn site cheaper than we pay for local cable. So it seems like a good value.
