Does anybody have tried sending laptop to PI? How did you do it, what carrier, how much and how long does it take to arrive to the receiver? thanks for the reply in advance!

my laptop before was sent via forex box , packed well with bubblewrap, firmly supported by thick towels. it was supposed to be sent via fed ex but they charge high taxes. with forex, no tax charge. my sister also sent me a CPU years ago using forex.

I'll say this: It's going to get expensive real quick after you figure in shipping cost, duty fees and or taxes, and then you have to wonder if it will arrive at all or in one piece.

Honestly, you might ask your brother to price one over there, and have him report back to you. Plus, by him buying it there from a reputable store, he can get warranty service on it, and extra softwares added to it at cheap cost.

Good luck.

Yes, that's what I am thinking too, the cost of sending and the risk of losing.

It's so expensive sending electronics to the Philippines. My husband sent me a cellphone and he bought it on ebay and custom held the item until I paid almost 4,000 php for tax. The cellphone he gave me at that time was just as much as a new one lol.

It would be better if you will be visiting the Philippines and bring the notebook with you instead of sending via mail. :D

I used DHL to ship a laptop to my wife.

It cost about $250, took 3 days and I learned to never tell the truth about the value!

If you do it, on the customs forms list it as used. If you don't want to lie simply open it & turn it on, then it is a used laptop.

Now declare the value at $400 and expect to pay tarriff between 600Php and 4,000Php.

If you choose this route definately use DHL. UPS uses Air21 and they are criminals. I sent an iPhone to her with a declared value of $400 and they raked us for 4,000Php. With the laptop I originally declared the value at $1,500 per DHL US's instructions and Ph Customs wanted 12,000Php in tarriffs! DHL PH & DHL US worked with us to get the declared value down to $500 and the tarriff was reduced to 600Php. UPS didn't care about AIR21 charging 7 times the tarrif on something with lesser declared value.

Seriously, the best route would be to send him the money to buy one from a reputable retailer locally.

oh yeah it's so costly sending electronics to the Philippines.. my husband sent me a macbook and ipod before.. he sent it via UPS.. when it was delivered to me, they had me pay for custom tax(based on the amount you declared for the goods)-- 3,000 php for the laptop and 4,000 for the ipod.. i was shocked when they told me about it and they said i could not claim the package if i'm not willing to pay for it..

i guess it will just cost you the same if you buy the laptop here in the Philippines considering the courier cost and the custom and duty taxes they will charge you..

Wow, what a nightmare!

It never ceases to amaze me the hassle, expense and danger involved in sending a computer or cell phone, or something of value to the PI.

THe duty/tax rate seems so arbitrary and predatory! And then the stress of wondering if the item will be stolen?!

It was so easy for me to take my laptop, and a second one to Mahal on my last trip. Not once was I questioned about having 2 laptops. Outside of bringing one personally, the only other real option is to send the money so the recipient can buy one locally,

It just isn't worth it to send a laptop. Based on your story above, one can argue for buying a plane ticket to the PI for a vacation, nad bring the laptop personally!

Bought a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop yesterday. Total was $474 with shipping.

I shipped a laptop via USPS Global Express to PI a couple years ago. Cost was $70 total. Took about 6 days.
