Hi there! I just registered here so I'm a bit lost how the forums work, but I have a question concerning name change...

My husband and I got married in Orlando, FL and now living in Jacksonville, FL and whenever we filed the marriage license, I kept my last name because I thought I could not take his last name until I became I citizen... but now I'm not sure if I could have taken his last name. We're about to send all the stuff for the AOS and I was wondering if anyone knows if I can change my last name even though I've already received my marriage certificate and how would I be able to do it? I really wanted to start the AOS process with his last name as mine also if it's possible....

Thanks!!

Your marriage certificate allows you to change your name. When you apply for the AOS be sure to write the name you want as your name and use your maiden name as other names used. You can change your passport when you go visit your country or visit an embassy here in the US.

Apply for everything under your name as you want it, which would be your husbands name :) Always carry the marriage certificate like when you go to the SS office etc......

Why is it that the only one who can stop the crying is the one who started it in the first place?

hello, surely you do not have to wait til you become a citizen to carry his last name behind your name. You married to him now so yes you can have his last name. You have the Marriage Certificate right? so thats the thing you need to change your name because thats the legal name changed document. i dont know if you already have a Social Security Card, if you do then you can start with that card, go to your local SS office and change it there, just show your marriage cerificate and they will change your name. And when you fill out all your AOS forms, put your husband's last name as your last name and put your maiden name in the OTHER NAME USED field.

Also the same thing with your Driver license if you do have one already.

But in California where i live, the DMV wont put my new last name on my driver license until i have my green card with my new name on it so i still have the DL with my old name but once i have my GC i will change it though. Right now i already have my SS card and my new passport with my new name.

It'll take a little more time but you'll get them done, good luck!

All the waits, stresses, tears, heartaches, all the miserable feelings you feel along the way will be paid off once you get what you've been hoping for...oh and WITHOUT PRAYERS? will be like trying to start a fire with water, JUST WON'T WORK!

No problem. Just file your AOS in your chosen married name, attach a copy of your marriage certificate and you are good to go. After you get your green card just go to SS and change the name on your socila security card or driver's lisence or whatever else you have. You can change your name any time you want

My marriage certificte also has my maiden name, however i changed all my docs to my husbands last name as it allowed. Just apply for everything in the name you want as yours. Meaning your husbands name as your last name

Oh! So even though I do not have my husband's last name on the marriage certificate I can still have his last name on stuff? I wanted to start the AOS process with his last name, but it requires I show proof of the name change.... I'm gonna try to find out with the clerk of the court if I can do changes on that certificate... I really want his last name to be my own :)

You do not have to change the name on the certificate. It will ALWAYS have your maiden name on your marriage certificate. This is the proof of your name change ( your marriage certificate ) . All you send as the proof is the marriage certificate that is your document allowing you to change your name. You do not have to change the certificate as they will nto do this.

Why is it that the only one who can stop the crying is the one who started it in the first place?

That's the thing though... My name on the certificate did not change at all. I don't have my husband's last name on it. I kept mine. :( There was no name change... that's what i'm trying to explain... this sux!

Just fill in the AOS forms with your new name. Attach marriage certificate, etc. I have green card in maiden name, but everything else is in married name.

However.... your greencard will come out with the name in your passport. You would have to change your name in Brazil -whatever hte process is- for that.

Marriage certificate always bear your maiden name and you don't alter anything on the marriage certificate. When people say change your name, basically means adding your husband's last name to your official documents such as SSC, Driver's License, bank stuff etc. To do that, you need to produce your marriage certificate to prove that you are married to the person with the last name that you are trying to change.

I think the "people" misunderstood when you said you want to change your name. As far as I know you can change your FIRST name when you apply for naturalization.

Hope that helps.

Cheers.
