You seriously haven't realized yet, that when Obama is criticized, either the topic is changed or they attack the poster?

Now come on J&A you can't seriously take the high road. First of all the VJ Right has been all over Obama even before he got into office, so to act like he's treated with kid gloves on VJ is not even remotely true. Secondly when Obama steps on it (for example when he said the MA police department "acted stupidly" about the black Professor being arrested for disorderly conduct before Obama knew the facts) a number of left leaning VJers denounced Obama's premature comments. Moreover when someone from the right says something stupid (e.g. the Glenn Beck thread) the vast majority of the VJ Right condones the remarks.

As for changing the topic I'm guilty of that in this thread, but it had nothing to do with protecting Obama... another poster used the Lockerbie bomber as an example & I threw in my 2 cents disagreeing with her. Trust me it's by no means a left wing conspiracy.

The Scottish Justice minister is supposed to make sure that the law is applied fairly and equitably; I'd like to know how many Scottish mass murderers have been released so soon for a merciful reasons ( terminal illness) per Scottish law.

*going to take a look*

edit-releasing this murderer -whilst legal-is an affront to all those who lost their lives and their families.

I found an answer on NPR of all places....

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.p...oryId=112177895

in the last 10 years since the Scottish parliament has being devolved there have been 31 applications for release on compassionate grounds, 24 of them have been freed and the seven that weren't freed, it was because the Scottish prison system didn't think that there was medical evidence that they had terminal illnesses.

what's wrong with NPR?

Nothing! Sorry, I should have elaborated...I spent a good bit of time on the Scottish Prisons official website, Scottish law websites...etc etc...and found it on good ol' NPR.

..Better?

I guess that really IS the way they deal with terminally ill offenders-but it's still reprehensible that he got to go home and to a heros welcome.....to make it worse whatshisface from Libya is coming over here soon! ack!

It is reprehensible and disgusting, yet ut imagine... if its almost mission impossible to get people to understand scientific things in this country that directly impact them- how are we to expect to influence the mental state of citizens of other nations that *have* somewhat of an antagonistic history with us.

As for Ghaddafi's visit to the US... well... that's called diplomacy. ;)

Maybe we won't need to be antagonistic in the future.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Lol K ON TOPIC - Yes I think Obama needs to pull back and refocus. He needs to remember what he said during debates with McCain and actually take Leiberman's advice about holding off with healthcare as the democrats want it. Instead they should focus on a system that curbs costs, regulates tort law, and get that bloody 10% increase in costs down to 0% for this year.

As Obama said in the debates, big ticket items may need to wait until the US reaches financial stability. Once that has been attained then a far reaching plan should be initiated. We're currently on course for financial meltdown if the National Debt reaches 20 trillion in ten years. Thats going to be like 170% of GDP.

What a sensible idea, or perhaps, he can just wait for another Republican revolution of 2010, and take on the right's issues, much the same way Clinton did, leading to a successful presidency in the minds of the left.

What are the current issues of the Right that weren't adequately addressed for the last 8 years, that you are hoping now Obama will take on?

I think the big difference between Then and now is; Clinton was never a hard core lib, (though his wife is).

Barack is hard core in his stances and his voting record proves it.

He may trim back the undue-able but he ain't gonna run to the middle like Clinton did.

Also Clinton was a seasoned Politician in every sense of the word, Obama is after all is not only learning how to be an executive leader.... on the job but he is also fairly new to "Big-boy" politics.

I mean he was only... how many days in the Senate before he began is Presidential run?

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

So, the right has already done their worst, and there is no further damage they could possibly do to the country?

I dunno, Bill - it sounds like that's what you are hoping for - for Obama to throw his arms up and say, screw what the American people elected me for, I'm gonna listen the Right because they deserve a second chance.

Being that Obama has almost as much trouble with the liberals as he does with the right wing I think a reasonable conclusion would be that he's closer to the center than the left.

So, it's all about the extreme dream team for you? No picking and choosing the best ideas, no matter where they come from?

I think Obama is much more of a practical politician, than either the left, or the right, give him credit for. In many ways, he is being hamstrung by Pelosi and Reid.

My prediction is that if Obama isn't reelected the left will blame the right for sabotaging him & we'll be right back in the same mess we had with Bush. At some point the left & right need to put the needs of the nation above their own selfish desire to screw the other party. If they don't it will become an endless cycle of gotcha politics.

This Scottish justice minister made a very unpopular decision but one that can be fairly, reasonably and correctly argued as legally absolutely water tight.

So all convicted mass murders are released after an 8 years if they have a terminal disease?

He served just 11 days for each death.
