Circumcision was universal in the USA until the last 15 years or so. When my nephews were born (they are 19 and 16) the doctor didn't even ask if my sister was having them circumcized, just scheduled it. I am pretty sure, the majority of baby boys are still circumcized in the USA but it is around 55%, unless you live in the Midwest (81%) or the South (65%).

Oh I know, they "cut" me too.

But back-in-the-day..... your parents could cancel that appointment and decline if they wanted too.

But they didn't decline. More than 77% of the population is circumcized with the highest rates in the 70's Also you don't have to do it, it is a promotion not a mandate. I didn't circumcize my 2 boys and won't be snipping the one I got due at the end of the year either.

Of course it's not a mandate.... we are still under the free market healthcare system.

As Rush Limbaugh put it yesterday: leave our penises alone.

I doubt they could mandate it. If they did, I would leave this country in a heartbeat to protect my son's genital integrity. What's the obsession with cutting little boys' penises lately? And for AIDS prevention, how about a condom?! There are also studies done that female circ reduces the chance of risking AIDS, and dudes, it is even worse than male circ. I personally respect religious motivations for circ, but that's about it. I wouldn't mandate anything, it is up to the parents, period. Mandating ####### just is like living in an unfree country. It's bad enough that the states mandate vaccines and don't tell parents about exemptions. It is the PARENTS decision what to cut or leave on their kiddos, and what to inject or not to inject.

I hate government interference and I see it more and more around here, soon the US will be more mandated than Europe.

The CDC recommends that people 50 and older get a flu shot. Many of these people (mostly those 65+) are on Medicare. They are not forced to get a flu shot. In fact, they need Medicare Part B to even have it covered.

The shots I was talking about are for public school, they are indeed mandatory unless you hand in a religious exemption (only allowed if you do no shots at all), or a medical (nobody ever gets it) or a philosophical (only in certain states, you get to pick and choose). West Virginia and Mississipi do not allow for any exemption but medical, and parents who don't want to vaccinate or don't want to do all of them are forced to homeschool. THat's just not right to me. Parents should decide, not the government.

It is a biggo to me as undecided parents will be coerced into having the procedure done. You wouldn't believe the pressure in hospitals after your baby is born. We refused e.g. a vitamin K shot as we had oral vitamin K (it prevents bleeding, oral is used all over Europe and just as fine, but less harm to the baby). The ped told us we were killing our baby. Yeah right that's why tons of kids die in Europe. We also refused antibiotic eye ointment as we knew I don't have STDs (if mom has syph, clamydia and so on kiddo might get blind, yet if mom is healthy, no reason to do it). Same ped said oh you never know and people cheat all the time, which might be true, but dude I know my marriage and was tested at 8 months of pregnancy - seriously. The hospital was anti-circ (CA, only 30% circ rate as of last year) yet the young ped on call wanted to do it and kept annoying us. What part of no thank you don't you understand?!

As far as vaccinations go - there are public health implications of someone who doesn't vaccinated against TB, for example. I can understand that stuff being mandatory, circumcisions not so much.
