I am glad to be home....however, I am not in a good mood. I am very grumpy. I am not in the mood to tolerate some people's attitudes today. BertieMae wants to unleash a can of whoop azz.

Special Education in the State of Georgia sucks BIG TIME. They are messing with my daughter's education and this is one momma you do NOT want to mess with and I don't care how difficult the SPED director can be...I'm much worse!

Well sister, move your connections in the teachers' union and #######.... and whoop some azz. I bet they have money for completely irrelevant ####### like high school football. Fuk that pisses me off.

I've had the complete opposite experience with special education. I used to teach it and got so fed up with some of the meddeling that I had to quit. Parents wouldn't agree with assessments and would go to the director of special education with an attorney threatening to sue if they didn't get their way. The next day, I would have the director telling me what to do.

The straw that broke the camels back was a mother of a downs syndrome child who wanted me to reccomend that her child be entered into the program to mainstream him into resource classes which is the courses for children with minor to moderate learning disabilities. So, I tested him for 6 weeks. When I came to my conclussion, she went ballistic. She came in with her attorney who had all the homework assignments that he had completed perfectly. Luckily for me, I suspected that the mom was doing the assignments for him, so I would have him independently try to do the same assignment again in the morning. So when she requested a hearing, the board agreed with me, but they were still clearly scared of of any sort of lawsuit and changed the ruling.

Right now I am so angry I am fighting back tears. I hate how legislation has fvcked up our educational system. I hate that I feel my hands are tied and dammit it's NOT fair to her! In our county...and lots of others in this fcuked up state, sports are soooo important. Teaching kids how to do basic math and reading fluently are apparently NOT the order of the day. THEN the state is so fcukn broke they have to furlough us three days...maybe more. SO do more with less...and don't complain or you might find yourself out on your azz.

They be messin wiff my girl....and I'm gonna unleash Towanda on the "powers-that-be" ....coated with honey of course.

The problem is, my baby has been classified as SLD (Specific Learning Disabilities), she has Receptive/Expressive Language Disorder, epilepsy - which has caused significant short term memory loss. Last term she was resourced for math and reading and was started out on grade 2 level work (she was grade 3) and the plan was to graduate her into grade 3 work - which is what was done. This term...instead of picking up where we left off, they puddle jumped her straight into grade 4 work...because of said federal laws being changed. So now she is lost and drowning.

BULLSHIT!!!!!

What happened to actually teaching kids and not worrying about whether or not we're meeting the standards of education like they do in other countries...like Japan (and no, I'm not a Japan hater)? It's all about NCLB...and Bush's fvckin promise to have every child reading on grade level by 2014. NCLB is bullshit legislation.

And I am working on my education IN education???? I have lost my fvckin mind.

Oh I hear you. For years I have sustained, the North American K-12 system is fvcked up, and that includes Canada. My fave system is the French, followed maybe by the Brits. And yeah yeah I've heard about the "evils" of academic vs. technical tracking yada yada. Those kids LEARN, and THINK. the ones here learn #######, but oh my! do they have good self-esteem...
