A Tampa police officer was killed this week - shot to death by an insane man who legally obtained quite an arsenal of firearms. Am I the only one that sees something wrong with that picture?

who determined he was insane?

But Delgado's family says he was depressed and bipolar, on and off medication, a wanderer, in and out of communication with them. At 34, he was an insomniac.

so bipolar people are insane?

Maybe not but maybe they shouldn't be able to legally acquire firearms.

that's above my pay grade to make that decision.

Various reasons? More like EXCUSES! Since when did the ghetto have locks on the gates?

Sadly for the most part, people put their own locks on those gates.

First they don't finish school then they get knocked up and start having babies or they run around and play the "wannabe pimp".

The simple fact is any teenager in this area can

1. stay in school and go right to the military and start their life just like I and so many others did.

In the military you will get the opportunity to go to collage and maybe for free.

The biggest mistake people in "those places" make is..... to start start having kids with no husband.

There is no greater predictor of poverty than this one factor.

2 people working even modest paying jobs can not only afford to move out.... but are able to buy a house outside of the hood.

Single mothers in the hood are nothing but factories which reproduce the violence misery which we blame on everything else.

Hell go into the suburbs and note the difference, when there is a problem, people hide in the house, the form patrols or neighborhood watch groups... or even security patrols.... why?

Because there are Men in the homes.

A few years ago, I heard oprah claim that 70% of black women are single.

That is not only astonishing but telling.

Until the black family is healthy, don't expect changes, in fact by many accounts it's getting worse.

Before many here were even Born, this country DECLARED WAR on poverty, we have spent untold billions and while a dollar a day solves poverty in most places in the world, our billions, seemed to not do a thing here.

Yet to listen to the poverty pimps talk.. "we have more people in poverty now than we've ever had".

Wish I knew a simple answer to the problem.

Yes, there are huge social issues plaguing Newark. Huge.

About the military - it isn't for everyone. It just isn't. I think you may do much more harm than good forcing a square peg into a round hole thinking anyone down and out can just up with the army and all will be well.

Additionally, just as an FYI - it isn't only black families in projects etc. And, it isn't populated solely by single mothers and their violence producing offspring.

A modest job somehow magically allowing someone to own a home? What kind of modest job are you talking about? A sales associate at Macy's maybe making $9/hr? A factory job [if you can find one in NJ] making $11/hr? You can NOT get out of the ghetto and into the suburbs on that kind of money - not unless Habitat for Humanity or someone similar is helping. Finding an ok rental in a neighborhood with weekly shootings as opposed to daily shootings? Yeah, that may be possible.

-While we agree the military might be everyones first choice in life, your suggestion that some how these "poor people just can't adjust" is not reflective of the great job many have done in year-gone -by when they were FORCED into the service under the draft.

-Look, I know the demographics in these areas, but we also know the likely offenders, hell we see them on the news every night.

- My claim about "working their way out of the hood" was referring to a married couple, each making modest wages.

We will use your probable wage numbers. 2 people making 10 bucks an hour is like $800. per week.

How much a month? $3200.00

Nuff said

The key is to form "healthy family units"... this is where the answer rests, which was my main point.

Well, a fine officer of the Tampa Police Department would be alive today if whack jobs like his killer wouldn't have ready access to firearms.

Piss off Natty, I'm not doing this with you again. Look it up for yourself, or don't. Its your call.

Again - either you're interested in what's going on in Newark (for the purposes of furthering discussion on the topic) or you're just fishing for another slanging match.

who needs to fish? I just asked your opinion ... and the answer is ^

and my good friend would still be alive if people did not have access to alcohol.

you do know that one can obtain guns quite easily if they know the right people on the street, don't you? surely you don't think the average gang banger legally obtains their heat from a gun dealer, do you? to use this officer's death to try to indict the gun purchase system with the checks imposed by the brady bill is just a bit dodgy.

but supposedly the guy in the story had obtained his guns legally....

and the police found a receipt on him for some of the guns.. I don't think you get a receipt for guns you buy off the street...

In all, investigators said Delgado was armed with three handguns, an assault rifle, and ammunition. Officers found a receipt showing some of the weapons had been purchased in the area of Fort Bragg,

Because you think my personal opinion on a mere statement of fact has relevance.

I don't live in Newark - I don't have an insiders perspective on the day to day life there. If they think that getting firearms off their streets will improve their quality of life, I don't see how I can fault them for it. Can you?

As I said (and I'll reiterate) what ought to be more interesting to you are the views of the residents of Newark. Again, if you are interested in actually discussing the topic - but (again) you clearly aren't.

Yes... I'm aware that there is big problem with gang crime and gun violence there, yes. I live about 10 minutes drive away...

Come on, Natty - get back to topic. Stop trying to make it about me.
