Wait, if he already has a license from overseas why does he have to re-take the test? Won't they let him just transfer it over?

nope, in California you have to take the written test and the driving test..

That's the way it is in many states. Out-of-country license=retake both written and driving tests.

Yup, I have an out-of-country license, international driving permit, and (expired) NV driver license, but still had to take the written and driving tests...

Here in Connecticut, licenses from Canada, Germany, and France are treated the same as out of states ones so they don't have to take the tests.

In Georgia I had to redo the written, driving, rules of the road and eye exams, and turn in my Canadian driving license. All foreign licensed drivers have to redo all of the tests to get a Georgia license.

Hey ~ time to update! So hubby took his 3rd DRIVING TEST BEHIND THE WHEEL yesterday! and he passed ! wohooo! i was so nervous. I think it had a lot to do with the instructor as well... i think the test instructor was super cool!!!!

Anyhow*_* i think also because I spent hours and hours lecturing him.... i think he finally realize that this is a brand new country and he has to learn everything from Ground Zero.

Glad he finally passed! NOW we are waiting for EAD because they will not issue him an actual D/L just a temporary D/L with Exp date I94 exp date.

The DMV exams are ridiculous.

I failed the driving test on my first try, because I wasn't doing things that are dangerous and or illegal in Belgium, like looking over shoulder when changing lane, or driving in the bicycle lane when taking a right turn.

And yes, a 10 seconds stop at the intersection is recommended! Ok, make it 5..

If you used to drive a stick, instead of automatic, keep in mind the automatic car will never fully stop unless you actually stand on your brake! If you don't wait long enough and release your brake, the car will start moving by itself, and you will see the examiner write something on his form...

I was never asked to do parallel parking tho. Or driving in reverse. Go figure..

he's the the best driver ever~ he worked for a car magazine in UK and test drives all vehicles makes around the world~ yet he moves to california and FAILS the driving test TWICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once for Pedestrian & once on a right turn ***

HeLp... any websites or links to know what's expected other than DMV Websites??

What states do you belong? in CA you can do less than 15 mistakes but you can still pass the driving they called it minor mistakes. During the test test avoid all the critical errors , base on my experience, I have no experience in driving but I passed the test when I took it first . yah I did 8 minor mistakes thats what the examiner told me...

Heres the link That I can give you that helps me a lot, just play all the video here and you will learn Top 10 Reasons for Failing the Driving Test

As somebody said before, he just has to drive like an old lady. Try to drive as if you were in driving school again, look to the mirrors all the time even if it doesnt make any sense. I know it's supid but it's the only way to pass. I failed my first time and I had a US license before, just because I was not driving like a retarded...

I have not even thought about driving in the USA as my sweetheart always does such a good job ferrying me about ;)

But I guess I need to start that ball rolling while i count the days before I board the plane to the land of the free....

As I am heading to Indiana, I have just emailed the BMV there with my " I'm a brit with 20+ years driving experience " ploy

and see what they have to say. I honestly don't know if I have it in me to drive like a granny as I have done some amateur rally driving and racing hill climb cars in my younger years. I'm likely to end up scaring the bejesus out of the tester if he ticks me off :)

I am hoping its just a written test and a new photo and away I go..... watch this space :P

some states require both the written test to be taken and the practical. I know Cali is one of them, the specific state dmv website is usually the best place to look at to see the process.

I have a license on my homeland but i still have to take DMV's written and behind-the-wheel test.

I've known some people who used to drive in their homeland too but failed to pass the exams.

Best is to read the manual and follow it by heart and have a driving lessons to monitor his driving habits.

you have to drive like a grannie.

Drive like my Granny and you'll give the poor examiner a heart attack
