i think they knew prior to McCain getting the nomination. Republicans don't even like McCain, so they put the gezzer in a fight he could not win.

Why would they do that exactly? (General question, not necessarily directed at you Smoke.)

I think it was more about the party being divided against itself, the neo-conservative folks whose emphasis emphasis was on foreign policy and who supported Bush on the national security stuff Vs. the conservative people who thought the government had dropped the ball on domestic policy.

It doesn't exactly make sense that the GOP would purposefully throw away an election.

honestly, how could a man that was close to dropping out of the GOP race who had no money because he had no supporters. out of nowhere become the front runner to lead the party in the next election?

Because when the chips came down they had to back someone. And its not like the voter turnout dropped in the last election...

exactly, they had to back someone in an election they knew the couldn't win. they knew bush ruined any chance of another GOP president in 2008 everyone knew they couldn't win.

It doesn't - but if voter turnout didn't decline and if McCain didn't lose by a landslide I don't see how it could be claimed that he didn't have a chance of winning the election, or that the party just threw it away.

The UK election in 97 was a conclusive public referendum that people had had enough of the Tory party - their representation in the house of commons was decimated.

That hasn't happened here.

The big problem was the McCain tried to cast his net as wide as possible - so he ended up not being liberal enough for the conservative democrats and not conservative enough for the conservative republicans.

Seriously who gives a flying ** about poll numbers at the start of a 4 year term.

If Obama can't enact the core policy initiatives of his campaign platform - he's obviously going to be out of office (unless of course the GOP manages to put up a completely ridiculous candidate - like Sarah Palin).

& i still say the GOP threw the election in 2008 coz no Republican would have won. McCain/Palin fvckin really?

pretty much my thoughts too.

You sound like the Jehovah Witness that came to my door one saturday weekend morning!

Too bad you're stuck with him for 4 years isn't it.

The bummer is, whoever gets elected in 2012, never gets to serve, when the world ends on December 21th. Bummer. No more Presidents.

They come here every week, and my wife talks to them! I finally got her to tell the witches not to show up today. That is a start, for her. She doesn't like to make anybody mad, except for me.
