Further clarification - to have denied the request as per Scottish criminal law would have been unprecedented. Effectively, had the minister denied the application (which was recommended by the parole board, the panel of medical experts, the governor of the prison - all parties of interest from the strictly legal point of view of the case) it would have changed Scottish law.

The Scottish justice minister acted bravely and responsibly and and I applaud his decision because he did what was right under Scottish law despite knowing that the UK government would not publically support it (even though privately I am sure they are gleeful - the true government culprits in this affair in my opinion with the Tony Blair/Qaddafi deal on prisoner exchange lurking in the background) . Only Libya can be held responsible for feting the return of a convicted criminal - Scotland can't be held responsible for that, nor should they be.

Is it honestly worth changing Scottish law over a guy who will be dead in 3 months, just to keep him in a Scottish hospital, rather than a Libyan one?

The law in Scotland is clear and was followed to the letter. you may not like the laws of Scotland but that does not mean that Scotland and it people are to blame for your preceived injustice.

You also need to go and read the history books about how much USA did to help the UK and Europe before peril harbour. It was only once the USA was attacked that they got involved. So no the people of Scotland are not weak. We had to deal with over 2 decades of living in fear as the IRA bombed our cities and town, while people in the USA send $$$$ to help the IRA in their campaigne of terror.

I saw with my own eyes the death and distruction that happened on that cold winters day in Dec 1988. If keeping him in jail would have changed the events of that day then I would back it 100% If putting him to death would have brought back the innocent lives that were cut short on that cold day then I would back it 100% if inflicting pain on him everyday for the last 8 years would have reversed the events of 1988 then I would have supported that too. But the truth is that nothing can change what happened on that day. For those of us who were there on that cold Dec day nothing will change the events of that day. If you need to blame someone then blame his home country for treating him like a hero, NOT the people of scotland who have paid to keep him in jail for the last 8 years.

I flew on that plane on March 21st 1988. Frankfurt to London to JFK. I really didn't want to get on that plane. I stood there looking at the name on the side, Maid of the Seas, thinking...well...I don't wanna' get on this plane! 2 years in Germany and the fact that I had drank all night got me on. I don't see why that's a big distinction - the Scottish justice system is what it is.

They don't summarily execute people, they don't deny medical treatment to prisoners and with this ruling it seems clear that don't play politics with their justice system, just to appease the short-sighted interests of people who don't think its fair.
