how did she like red dawn????

She thought it was an OK 80's movie. I tried to impress upon her that this is what I grew up on, that the Russkies were evil and poised to invade us at any time and we had to be ready. And also that this movie, in no small way, added to the allure of Russian ladies a little bit later in life for me.

She wasn't having any of that because, for her, it was just another action movie. However, the positive thing she did take from the movie was the "readiness" factor - "we must be ready for if something happens." I doubt Cuban-trained Soviets will ever invade the U.S., but if they do, my wife will be ready!

movies with russian voiceovers

I hate those things! The voiceovers drive me freakin nuts! I could watch it if they'd get rid of the English voice but they never do and so my mind is forced to comprehend two languages at once and while I'm trying to enjoy a storyline, my mental translation engine is doing double duty trying to scan both English and Russian and match for authenticity.

Works fine when I'm reading English subtitles and listening to Russian voices because I'm using my eyes - which apparently operate on a different system than my ears - but for some reason I can't do "two ears" at once. Makes me go cross-eyed. (Just watched Rock n Rolla last night - thumbs up!) This is also why I watch Wuxia movies in Mandarin with English subtitles.

I have enjoyed Peculiarities of the National Fishing, Ivan the Terrible in the 20th century, and many others.

My wife was telling me about the Peculiarities movies. I haven't seen them yet, though.

And, who knew there were so many Big Lebowski fans in this forum!

What about Napoleon Dynamite? Truly a love-it-or-hate-it movie. To me, it is like the Big L in that it gets funnier each time. Do you think a Russian woman with decent English comprehension will "get it"?

To be quite honest, I didn't really like The Big Lebowski all that much. It was funny, but I didn't buy it or anything. I've only watched it a few times, so maybe I'll watch it again one day and it'll just click for me. There were funny parts, but for my money, if I'm going to watch a bowling movie, I'll take Kingpin over TBL any day.

I have never seen Napoleon Dynamite and don't see myself watching it anytime soon. Movies along those lines just don't do it for me.

or even Ferris Bueler's Day Off.

Now here's a movie I can get down with! I think every day I stayed home sick it's been on TV. I think they play it daily just for that reason. I had my wife watch it and she liked it. She's referred to it as, "zat movie whis boy who sick and not go to za school."

Jennifer Grey and Charlie Sheen were also in Red Dawn. That's just how the 80's roled!

Also I agree slim I like Kingpin more than TBL purely from the quote when they walk in to the national bowling center in reno and someone says "Here you will find some of the greatest athletes in the world" and they look at all the huge dudes eating pizza. I worked in 2 different bowling alleys in my life and its just like that on league night.

Another good one is Uncle Buck but truth is how can you go wrong with any John Hughes movies from the 80's

One thing to note with TBL - it's easy to semi-dismiss it as mildly funny but not very exceptional after a single viewing. I was persuaded to give it a 2nd look by a friend, and after that every time I watched it I discovered new comic gems in the dialog. There's so much going on just below the surface that it takes a few viewings to appreciate it

I was hooked the first time. Right about the point where they pulled The Dude's head out of his toilet, screamed "where's the money Lebowski?" and he says "it's down there somewhere, let me take another look." The Cohen brothers tend to be hit or miss (No Country for Old Men, seriously #######?!?!) but TBL is sheer cinema genius.

I don't think TBL is really *about* bowling. I don't consider the Big Lebowski and Kingpin to really be about the same thing at all. It's not that Dude is a bowler. It's that he's The Dude.

EXACTLY!

[yup. no going to the movie theatre or drive-in for us. just wait til you can use subtitles- which completely distract me btw. i miss all the action by reading subtitles i don't need to read. then, i'm explaining what they mean because most dialogue cannot be literally interpreted; there's usually some kind of pop culture reference foreigners just don't get. my movie-watching experience will never be the same.

That is the problem with Inglorious Bastards, huge parts of the movie are in German and French which I understand with no problem. Although hearing the French, and trying to read the English subtitles when the translation isn't perfect throws me for a loop. Actually one key piece of dialog was translated very poorly from German to English (grammatical issues), which was surprising since the rest was done failry well.

That line sets the pace for the rest of the movie.

Havent seen either and we no longer have russian channels on the satellite.

Damn economy. Your "change" should be showing up any time now.

Agreed on all of that. Did you ever watch the TV show - Ed? Good "bowling" show featuring Michael Ian Black and Justin Long before they "blew up." I'm still waiting on Tom Cavanagh to get on a funny show again.

Pretty much what I figured since everyone seems to like it. I had to do that with Half Baked and now really enjoy that movie every time I watch it. I've watched TBL twice and I do find it funny, I just get bored about four minutes into it.

We don't have a cow..... but we have a bull.

That line sets the pace for the rest of the movie.

I think I messed up the quotes somewhere in there.... but absolutely correct. Well, that and the part where he has to "pay" his rent. Ugghhhhh!

I'm thinking about screening Cool Hand Luke soon. Thoughts? I think it's more of a "guy movie" and she'll be bored after the first ten minutes. She could probably "get it" but to sit through the entire thing... I don't know. Anyone showed their ol' lady this gem yet?

I shuddered for days!

Cool Hand Luke is a great movie, but the prison is nothing like Russian prisons. They had it easy there. Bullit is better movie.

That's kind of what I was thinking - without "help" this is probably not a chick-friendly movie. Do me a favor and call Samson, tell him I want a pound of his sweetest cheeba.

Was that a "just look at him" because he's chiefin or because he's an attractive enough dude to make ladies sit through a long, boring movie?

I'm not sure if there are any worse prisons than in Russia and since I don't watch scary movies, there's no way I'd watch a Russian prison movie. Cool Hand Luke is not so much a prison movie, it's more of a buck the system movie.

I haven't watched Bullit in it's entirety. Every time I get ready to watch it, something comes up.

I'm due for another viewing of Last of the Mohicans. I like to watch that movie at least once a quarter to keep my mind right. When Nike made that football commercial with the Mohicans score, I wept. Talk about motivation. It doesn't get much better than that!

Doesn't surprise me. The RU forum is what happens when you #### a stranger in the *ss. :D

ND is funny and even clever at times, but overall I don't think it really holds up. Certainly it doesn't come close to TBL or even Ferris Bueler's Day Off. Funny concept but the execution just wasn't very consistent. I'm guessing it would be pretty obscure for a Russian, but who knows, I've been surprised.

my favorite line is : Nihilists! F@#k me. I mean, say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos.
