I'd like to report back that Hitman was a success.

Sure I had to pause it 20 times so I could explain what was going on, but it was worth it.

Half that movie took place in Russia. Why did you have to explain anything?

The best line in that movie was when he told her to shut up or he'd put her back in the trunk. Well, that and, "it's not polite to stare." Bond girls rock!

I always look at the authenticity of the guns in those type of movies.

My personal favorite is when they start off the scene with a 9mm and end up with a completely different 45 or something.

I almost forgot - Red Dawn. That movie played a huge roll in my cold war conditioning..... and subsequently required me to do a little investigative work once I came in contact with Russian women. I had to see if they were as bad as they were portrayed to be in the movie. They seemed allright to me!

how did she like red dawn????

Both the Big Lebowski and Army of Darkness are big in my house. I think the only films I introduced were some of my older favorites, like Sunset Boulevard.

Wow, I haven't yet shown The Big L to my wife, yet - I assumed the humor (most of which is via dialog) wouldn't translate well. I'll have to give it a try this week.

One of my friends and I went to Lebowskifest a few years ago when it came to NYC. I've never before watched a movie that gets funnier every time you see it.

We have both loved and hated each others movie.

Every movie I like is stupid

Every movie she likes is the most wonderful thing.

Lena's not big into classics although she like Citizen Kane, Buckaroo Banzai not so much. Liked Escanaba in da Moonlight,Gran Torino(lots of explanation) Lord of the rings, Batman(new ones), anything with Swarzenager in it.

I have enjoyed Peculiarities of the National Fishing, Ivan the Terrible in the 20th century, and many others.

I've seen two dubbings. One is the one which I think is closer to the original (the Goblin one) and the other one, whose name escapes me at the moment. I like the Goblin one better, because it is closer to the original text. It's mostly done the way I would translate the text into Russian. The other one I've seen doesn't use mat and tries to convey the humor more than the literal English meaning, I think. Native Russian speakers tend to prefer this one. But it is a VERY popular movie in Russia.

I have never seen many movies but I am looking forward to sharing many with Natalya.

Of the ones I have seen, I like action films, such as Steven Seagal, I like drama and I like comedy. Do not like horror films, do sometimes like chick flicks.

I am finally getting to a point in my life where I want to take it a bit easier. Movies seem like a good diversion to work. Sitting on the sofa, drink in one hand and my arm around my sweetie, watching some flick on the HDTV seems pretty close to heaven.

I wanted to watch movies with my former wife, but she would talk during the movie or make comments about something that might be suggestive or a face someone made. It was upsetting so I just gave up watching movies together. I like to just enjoy the story line or the action, I do not desire to hear a continued critique of the film. After it is complete, sure, lets talk about the flick and voice our opinions.

That sounds like a vignette that explains a lot about why she is your former wife! If you cannot work it out by talking but instead just give up on sharing something fun together, that is bad news. Believe me, I know from experience.

And, who knew there were so many Big Lebowski fans in this forum!

What about Napoleon Dynamite? Truly a love-it-or-hate-it movie. To me, it is like the Big L in that it gets funnier each time. Do you think a Russian woman with decent English comprehension will "get it"?

ND is funny and even clever at times, but overall I don't think it really holds up. Certainly it doesn't come close to TBL or even Ferris Bueler's Day Off. Funny concept but the execution just wasn't very consistent. I'm guessing it would be pretty obscure for a Russian, but who knows, I've been surprised.

What about "Everything Is Illuminated" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0404030/

I am looking forward to see "9" -- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0472033/ by Timur Bekmambetov. Bekmambetov is the guy who did Night Watch, Day Watch and Wanted.

how did she like red dawn????

She thought it was an OK 80's movie. I tried to impress upon her that this is what I grew up on, that the Russkies were evil and poised to invade us at any time and we had to be ready. And also that this movie, in no small way, added to the allure of Russian ladies a little bit later in life for me.

She wasn't having any of that because, for her, it was just another action movie. However, the positive thing she did take from the movie was the "readiness" factor - "we must be ready for if something happens." I doubt Cuban-trained Soviets will ever invade the U.S., but if they do, my wife will be ready!

movies with russian voiceovers

I hate those things! The voiceovers drive me freakin nuts! I could watch it if they'd get rid of the English voice but they never do and so my mind is forced to comprehend two languages at once and while I'm trying to enjoy a storyline, my mental translation engine is doing double duty trying to scan both English and Russian and match for authenticity.

Works fine when I'm reading English subtitles and listening to Russian voices because I'm using my eyes - which apparently operate on a different system than my ears - but for some reason I can't do "two ears" at once. Makes me go cross-eyed. (Just watched Rock n Rolla last night - thumbs up!) This is also why I watch Wuxia movies in Mandarin with English subtitles.

I have enjoyed Peculiarities of the National Fishing, Ivan the Terrible in the 20th century, and many others.

My wife was telling me about the Peculiarities movies. I haven't seen them yet, though.

To be quite honest, I didn't really like The Big Lebowski all that much. It was funny, but I didn't buy it or anything. I've only watched it a few times, so maybe I'll watch it again one day and it'll just click for me. There were funny parts, but for my money, if I'm going to watch a bowling movie, I'll take Kingpin over TBL any day.

I have never seen Napoleon Dynamite and don't see myself watching it anytime soon. Movies along those lines just don't do it for me.

or even Ferris Bueler's Day Off.

Now here's a movie I can get down with! I think every day I stayed home sick it's been on TV. I think they play it daily just for that reason. I had my wife watch it and she liked it. She's referred to it as, "zat movie whis boy who sick and not go to za school."

Jennifer Grey and Charlie Sheen were also in Red Dawn. That's just how the 80's roled!

yup. no going to the movie theatre or drive-in for us. just wait til you can use subtitles- which completely distract me btw. i miss all the action by reading subtitles i don't need to read. then, i'm explaining what they mean because most dialogue cannot be literally interpreted; there's usually some kind of pop culture reference foreigners just don't get. my movie-watching experience will never be the same.
