Socialism applied to a college class

Who would've known that humanity was prone to fail so consistently via its laziness.

Now if only people would stop fantasizing about socialist theory and go and read those darn health care bills...

Read the health care bill  1000 plus pages of legal writings, no thanks I choose life!

Well they have been circulating for some time. Even those calling for a more slow approach to discussing this agreed that the bills should have been looked at more carefully. It really isn't that hard to go through 1000 pages ya know- in the time that's passed since we've been seeing very hysterical and irrational fearmongering at work, some of the less hysterical could have exercised their brains a bit and done the recommended 30 minutes of reading a day.

Im just saying with out some sort training/experience this could get very confusing, not to mention the countless cross references.

I did give it a try and realized I will have to rely on the pros to explain to me, ones that are held accountable to what they say and are well known enough to be challenged.

Hmmm... I can definitely understand how some folks would be easily confused by legislative language. But really... if people don't want to learn to verify the source of their philosophical, political, and economical motives, then they shouldn't be participating in the process at all. That just makes them appear to those that do fact check as complete tools.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

We can be pros at everything and sometimes we must rely on the pros. Life is just too short. I would argue that if your going to take a stand for or against this bill that you should have a very good understanding of the bill but to be able to comprehend and digest 1000 pages of legal nonsense is a whole different thing.

And the clock continues to tick. Time that could have been spent better utilized on reading.

It is interesting we mention professionals in the interpretation of language. I think most people would consider irresponsible to believe 'pros' that mention things that would come about of these bills by direct action of these bills when in quite clear fact, those things are not themselves written in the bills.

Hence the need for reading. The language really isn't that complicated to understand.

People could read the bills, but that would require an active engagement with what is going on - many people aren't prepared to take that responsibility when there are so many colorful distractions to tie up their time.

I would like to point out that since the OP is blabbing something about a college class... I'd assume that somehow... involving education and all... that reading would be involved.

Well if you want to know what I think - its that few people want to take responsibility for ruling themselves and develop an active engagement in politics - aside from the cynical and apathetic "politicians - they're all liars and bastards!"

I think its very easy to blame corrupt politicians for being corrupt and duplicitous and to blame the media for not doing its job of independent scrutiny - but the truth is that on some level people want to be ruled and this is reflected in the political system that we have.

Lets be very careful with that part in bold. You know... some folks clearly have issues with having you express your particular opinions on some topics. Strange, I know.

So last semester my crazy stoner prof said we could all have the same grade if we wanted to take the test together (mainly because he didn't want to grade all the tests) and no one wanted to do it.

Been there before- but used it as a learning tool. On several projects I broke up my class into small groups of mixed academic history and graded the student with the lowest grade history for each group. It was amazing how everyone contributed to making sure learning occurred.

it's a lot of pages?

double spaced ... 25 lines/ page ... approx average of ~8 words/ line ...

heck Louis L'Amour wrote longer short stories.
