My fiancee is coming the the United States in 2 weeks, Texas law says a person from another country is allowed to drive with her driver's license from her home country for up to a year if the United States and that country have reciprocity. Does anyone know where to find out if the United States and Ukraine have reciprocity for Driver's Licenses? I've spent an hour googling this and haven't found the list.

Thanks!

Call your local DMV if you haven't done so or call the police station (the latter I did). I had to verify this for my fiance. He also came prepared with an International Driver's license just in case.

I saw that too..but even Germany isn't on there...

Sure it is:

© Other Countries Honoring Agreements. The following countries, with the exception of Mexico, have ratified neither of the preceding agreements. They will, however, honor the provisions of those agreements:

(1) Mexico;

(2) Switzerland;

(3) Germany.

Hey check this one out:

http://info.sos.state.tx.us/pls/pub/readta...ch=15&rl=91

It doesn't look like Ukraine has the reciprocity. :blush:

I saw that link, but it lists the UNION OF SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLICS, which made me think (a) the link is very old, and (B) Ukraine had been a part of the USSR and so maybe Ukraine still has reciprocity.

I emailed the Texas Department of Transportion, but I haven't heard back yet. You would think this information would be easy to find :-[

Either way USA-wide you can drive on a license with an international translation up until your eligible to get a US one.

You are allowed to drive with almost any license ... if not, how do tourist rent cars?

And that is not only Texas. That is the whole US. She must carry her passport at all times to prove that the license belongs to her.

Do you have a source for this? I'm not doubting you. This is what I want to believe, but I feel like I need verification. I called my insurance company and they told me to call my local DMV. Forget that. IMPOSSIBLE. My insurance company did say my husband would be covered as he is listed as my husband on my account.

Allowed to drive and have own insurance are two different things. Regarding insurance only the actual insurance company has a say.

Yes. That's my point. I have assurance from my insurance that he will be covered, but I'd like to have assurance that he will be legal to drive, and I can't seem to find it anywhere. He's trying to get an international drivers lisence, but we can't find a legitimate agency in his country.

Not true in every state. California doesn't recognize an international translation as a valid driver's license. However, they will recognize the original license, providing it is valid and the driver is still a resident of the country in which it was issued. If the driver has taken up residence in California, then the foreign license is no longer recognized, and the driver has to get a California license. New residents have 10 days to get a California license in order to continue driving in California. I would imagine other states have similar requirements about residency.
