Went with fiancee to Social Security Office to get a number and was told we first need a work authoriation form to get SS card. I was told that we need to file an I-766 form or I-688 or we could get a Fed ID number at the IRS and then apply for SS card. VJ does not list an I-766 or I-688 what the...Has anyone else had this problem. It could delay bank account and drivers lic. waiting on the process time. I would apreciate any info. moboatman @msn.com

If your fiancee came in on a K1 visa, she is already authorised to work so does not need EAD, read the VJ guides surrounding applying for SS number, there is a form to download to take with you that explains to the SS office that a K1 CAN have a SS number, i'd go back with all the documentation and try again, i had no problems getting a SS number when i entered the US.

Good luck :)

Selina.

Hang on! The K1 does NOT authorize you to work! You will need to wait for the EAD approval to be authorized. In the *past* you sometimes could get a work authorization on entry with a K1, but my understanding is that is no longer the case.

You need to follow this guide and download the info for K1 visa holder and take with you to the SS office, it happens alot to people they turn you away, but make them enter the info in the system and they will be able to get you a ss#. (IF CUSTOMS HAS ENTERED YOUR INFO....SO IT IS BEST TO WAIT 3 WEEKS AFTER ARRIVAL IN US). When you receive the card it will say "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION"

which essentially means you need EAD to work.

You can find many things that say "K1 visa holders" are able to work immediately etc. but things have been changed and K1 holders are NOT authorized to work upon arrival in US, you must wait until you receive EAD. Believe me I researched the heck out of this subject.

These search links might help you.

Now would be a great time to :time:

Not sure what you took to the SSA, or what you told them but if the I-94 had at least 14 days remaining (before it expired) you should have been able to apply for the card.

Yes, it should be easy for a K-1 visa holder to get a SS card but thay are not authorized to work until they get an EAD. It even says on the SS card "Valid for work only with DHS authorization".

Interesting information on this issue here: http://www.ssa.gov/oig/ADOBEPDF/audittxt/A-08-07-17044.htm

I wonder if they've changed the issuance policy in accordance with the recommendations in this audit report?

Improved USCIS Form G-325A (Biographic Information)

Form field input font changed to allow entry of dates in the specified format and to provide more space for addresses and employment history. This is the 6/12/09 version of the form; the current version is 8/8/11, but previous versions are accepted per the USCIS forms page.

This section also covers getting a Social Security Number (SSN) and is for general discussion on all these topics.

If she has been here less than 76 days, I would go back to the office and ask to speak with a manager and tell him or her to read RM 00203.500 C1.

BTW which office was this?

Nothing has changed at SSA regarding a K-1's eligibility to be assigned an SSN using the unexpired Form I-94 as evidence of employment authorization for SSN purposes.
