And now for my smartass post.....

Little babies ARE cute. Toddlers are cute. Children are adorable when they first start to formulate a personality, when they learn to read and write. You just can't imagine your life without them and just THINKING about them leaving home brings tears to your eyes.

But God had a plan. He soon turns them into teenagers. They become surly and sullen. They look at you like you are stupid. They get expensive....formula and diapers is PURTY CHEAP compared to car insurance and college.

Pretty soon you can't wait for them to leave home......

I already have 4 and Dan has 2. All adults now so we are just going to enjoy each other.

Oh my god! You guy don't look near old enough to have adult children! I have to start living the pirate life!

Kajikat - you could always adopt :) Both my brother and I are adopted...different mothers...and I like to think we both turned out pretty well. If Ic ouldn't have children I would DEFINITELY adopt. My parents gave me a life better than my birth parents could have and Ia m so thankful that I was given a second chance!!!

We're going to seriously consider that... but you have to have been married for 2-3 years before they'll even let you express an interest, and then it takes a couple of years after that to arrange an adoption. By which time DH might well be too old for them to let us do it. (he's 42 and not in the best of health)...

You might want to check into the adoption of a foreign child through Holt International. There are loads of kids in other countries who need good homes - and you don't get into the business where mama comes back three or four years from now and tries to reclaim the infant she once gave up. Depending on the country, there may also be fewer restrictions on the parents such as weight, age and health. You still have to jump through many of the hoops you do with American agencies as far as having your background and home checked out, but a lot of the archaic restrictions regarding parental health and age are more 'loose' with some international adoptions.

and you are thrown right back into immigration game again!!:dance:

Boy, do I hear ya' Rebecca!!!!!! I agree with you that the teenage years are made that way on purpose so that when they move out, it's a lot easier on us!!!!!

Now, call me stupid, but my 18-year old daughter arrives here tomorrow (she's been in Oregon working) to attend college for 4 years!!!!!!!!!! YIKES!!!!!! I guess her living with her Dad since she was 10 made me oblivious to teenage girls ways. Her two older brothers were a piece of cake in comparison. Oh well, we'll make the best of it, I guess.

I am soo ready for kids I can't stand it...but hubby wants to wait and with good reason. He only just got here and we need to share eachother selfishly for at least two years....but darn it..I am READY

I spoke to a young woman of about 20 something the other day, she kept insisting how kids were great, so I asked her when was the last time you went out and partied til the next day? She said she couldn't because of kids.

I asked when was the last time you woke up and then spent the entire day fooling around with her boyfreind? She said the kids usually got her up in the morning.

I asked have you ever thought about just jetting off for the weekend to another part of the country or another country? She said if she travels the kids come with her and it all needs to be planned.

At this point I asked her why kids were so great, she told me because they're my kids, I told her well you enjoy your kids, I'll enjoy my time, money and freedom. She just sat there looking very much like she'd been 0wned and knew it.

-I don't "party". Hang out with friends? yes. Some of them already have babies/kids.

-I'm married and don't fool around with a boyfriend all day, or my husband...as there is this thing called work that he has to do...

- We're never able to just jet off somewhere for the weekend...only those with a lot of extra money can! For us it always takes planning anyway.

So, I still look forward to having kids.

Neither Sian nor I particularly like children. Actually, we can't stand them. Lucky really, since we both are concerned about over-population. Also, we both feel that it is incredibly selfish for anyone to have more than 2 children - one to replace each parent. It's greedy and hurts the planet. Not to mention what it does to property taxes. (More kids = more kids in school = higher taxes) Personally, I'm tired of paying triple what my property taxes were 4 years ago just so I can underwrite the families with 3, 4, 5 or more children.

I have a son from a previous relationship (he'll be 18 this month - he lives with his mother.... I've never even met him. Her choice, not mine - she bailed just before the wedding.) and Sian has a son from a previous relationship - Jordan, who will be moving here with her. In the end, it works out. One couple - two kids.

Anyway, Sian works in genetics (Specifically, she works for the NHS analyzing fetal DNA). For every year over 30 the mother is, the greater the chance that a baby would have some sort of "problem", such as Down's Syndrome. Even if we wanted more kids - which we DON'T - she would be hesitant based on that.

Ok, everyone can start the replies now about how horrible we are because we can't stand kids. Believe me, I'm used to it.

I can sympathize with your dislike of children, actually. Or rather... the way people are with their children. I think American kids are overly coddled and catered to (in general). You have no idea how many times I've seen kids throwing tantrums in the street, refusing to listen to the parents, and the parents saying "Well, okay honey, if you don't want to go to [Grandma's/the supermarket/Anne Taylor/any other boring place] we won't!" Or... the kid is FLYING down the sidewalk on skates and if YOU don't get out of his way, you will hear it from the mother for getting in the kid's way  instead of the mother teaching the kid to be respectful of the fact that other people will use the sidewalk and to be careful of others. It gets on my nerves.

I *do* want children and so does my fiance', but I hope that when I am a mother I won't be so wishy-washy with them and let them dictate to me and their father what we will do and when and how, etc.

I know exactly what it is, I heard so much horrible things for not wanting children and getting rid of my fertility. Some people even wish death on me

Well it has to be difficult representing only 3% of the adult female population that choose to be sterilized by choice :o
