That sucks, Trailmix...sorry to hear your experiences haven't been very good thus far :(

I finally finished getting my account set up last night. All the photo copies of my ID's I had to snail mail in since we can't find the cord for our digital camera and Customhouse's faxline was always busy, and I couldn't call them from work and ask them to accept the fax since our phones don't dial out of the country.

All in all, they've been pretty patient with me so far. I'm hoping that these transactions don't take any longer than 6-8 days since I only signed up with Custom House to eliminate the need to mail checks to my bank every two weeks for visa payments. (I'm kicking myself every day for moving down here with a balance on my visa...making payments has been a huge pain in the neck, and the interest I've paid just trying to mail in checks has been ridiculous  .)

I'll keep you guys posted when I do a transfer next week and let you know how long it took.

I noticed my transactions got a bit quicker the more I did them.

Mine take 5 business days on the dot usually. Should definitely speed things up for you Misty.

I haven't tried going from the US to Canada though, my transactions have all been from Canada to the US.

Sorry to hear that trailmix, guess every company has an idiot or two,lol My transactions al seemed to take around 4-5 Business days! One time it was taking longer--I had just set up a new USA bank acct---so I called CH up and they said the hold up was the USA bank side--they had not replied to CH fax to verify my account. SO, CH set up a 3 way conversation between me,, the USA bank and CH and had it settled within minutes, was pretty cool. Will see if anything changes now that Western Union has bought CH!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

thnx for the site..I've actually watched it and got a question.

I thought customhouse does not charge any service fee for any transaction..i thought they make money via exchange rates...

but during demo, there was a service fee of 8.33 GBP(great britan pound)

do they also charge such service fee between CDN&USD transactions?

The second question:is there any advante of transfering big amount of cash as opposite to the small ones....would i get a different rate if i wanna trasnfer 50,000CDN in one shot?

thnx

I have never been charged a fee for ELECTRONIC FILE TRANSFERS (EFT) they do charge a fee for wires! If ur exchanging a large amount of $$ ur best to phone them and see if they can give u a better rate, as well your going to have to contact them to raise ur limit

I just did my first transaction!! It's funny...I've been delaying it for over a month now all because I haven't been patient enough to learn how to do it. The thought of calling CustomHouse and asking for help somehow makes me just want to avoid the situation at all costs lol.

Anyways, I just sent $5.00USD for a little trial run so I could see how it works. It ended up transferring into $5.21C...enough extra money made to buy a timbit

I'll keep you guys posted on how long it takes to actually hit the Canadian bank.

Also, how are you guys normally transferring...are you using Wire, Draft or the free ECH option?

I signed up for my account a couple of weeks ago, thinking I'd use this option for transferring the balance of my bank account here in Canada over to my fiance's account when I move in a couple of weeks. But then I went to TD for a deposit and decided to ask the woman how much they would charge. She said it'd only be $30, and it would effectively close out my account with them. Was surprised to see that it was so easy, but works for me.

I use electronic transfer, it's freee!

I just did another transfer recently - it took 5 days for CH to actually do the transfer, another 3 days, I think it was, to be deposited in my bank here in Canada :)

Yeah I guess a lot must depend on the two banks involved.

I was thinking that too originally, but now I'm not so sure it's just about the two banks. I'm leaning more towards how often the service is used. We've been transferring twice a month since my husband arrived in late August and at first, it took 7 days. After that, a few times in a row it was down to 6 and now it's down to 5. I've been curious about the time difference since we are always using the same two banks, but I just always plan on 7 days and when it's earlier I'm happy. :) I first heard about CH from Flames and want to say THANKS for that. They've been fantastic!
