Biden's role expanding despite gaffes

WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is being tapped to play bigger roles in some of the White House's highest-priority efforts, administration officials say.

Despite some gaffes, such as comments that stoked swine flu fears, President Barack Obama is calling on Biden for help more frequently, especially after playing a key role in winning passage of the economic stimulus bill in Congress, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

Biden has been asked by Obama to be more involved in efforts to get healthcare reform passed by Congress, to oversee stimulus spending and to be at the table on foreign policy issues, the newspaper said.

"For the president to give him the single largest initiative to date (the stimulus) with all the potential risks and pitfalls attached, speaks to a level of trust that's quite real," White House communications director Anita Dunn told the Times.

Biden's verbal gaffes have been forgiven by the president, White House adviser Valerie Jarrett said.

"We all have to have our words clarified at times. That's part of what makes the vice president so endearing," Jarrett told the Times. "Everyone says, 'Oh, my gosh. I could have said that.' And the press tends to over blow it. We wouldn't change him one bit."
