The UK NHS has many flaws. It is over-stretched, weary, beleaguered, underfunded, occasionally incompetent, occasionally misguided, in parts outmoded, over-managed and often frustrating.

I have had occasion to need the NHS a few times in my life. Sometimes I had to sit in a waiting room longer than I would have liked. Sometimes I felt that I was getting a little less than the 100% attention I thought I deserved.

A visit to a GPs office in the US is much the same as it is in the UK. You often don't get seen "on time" and your time with the doctor often feels rushed.

I never had to wait so long in the UK as I do here. You wait in the waiting room, then you wait in a cubicle that's isn't the Dr's own office, btw as it is in the UK, until the Dr finishes whatever it is he is doing in between seeing patients (perhaps sitting in his own office entertaining drug reps?) The nurse comes in and performs some possibly unnecessary tests regardless of what you have come in to the office for. I see the system as wasteful with a much larger number of admin than you get in a UK dr's office as well.

I have always experienced good medical care here, last time I saw the doctor he spent an hour with me and i never feel rushed....but maybe it is different because I get seen on a military base?

It's like with everything, there are good and bad. I am not suggesting the care is bad, just inefficient in large offices. Where I have lived in the UK I Have never experienced such a large office - although the last office I used was considered large for the UK.

Actually so far I have found that I was more rushed in specialists offices than the GP. Those guys are the most likely to nickel and dime you as well - demanding a $25 co-pay to remove stitches and give you the results of the tests you had done at the last appointment.
