Most people (with health insurance) either get it through work or are able to pay for it.

One would think & hope it were that simple. i just tried to purchase emergency coverage for myself as i was going to be a few weeks w/o coverage till the new plan kicked in...i HAD the money to pay for it... in fact i had been saving money in preparation to pay for it. When i called BCBS, the man literally yelled at me, telling me i should stay in New York to take care of my "pre-existing condition" (even though i had previously had creditable coverage in NY and all the documents to prove it). He refused to quote me a price on the phone, saying it was "too expensive." i had previously been covered AND i had money saved to pay for individual insurance. It was terrible, and i plan on writing to someone about it... i just don't know who??

Hey, i'm in Baton Rouge now... i made it... and back online... trust i didn't miss much?

Welcome back! :luv: Lots of yelling back and forth over health care reform. This is probably the most heated issue we've had in this country in awhile.

Are you doing ok?

Hey, thanks! Yes, i'm okay...

Yes, i've been watching all the debates on tv & now i'm at a university, so lots of debate there, too!

i missed you guys! :star:

And you're somehow you're better? Unless you live in the wilderness, you are as much a dependent on the very government you despise as anyone else. Bleeding hypocrite.

Dependent on services which are paid for by my taxes.

Considering the amount of tax I send to Washington, the damn roads should be paved with gold and still have money left over.

Fail.

Your money got spent on "Shock and Awe".

The beggar on the street can probably receive Medicaid. MC, six and Steve (if they lost their employer provided health care) likely could not. They'd be caught in the middle. They'd be caught between the beggar and you. They would have worked and paid taxes all their lives, but at the moment they lose their coverage they become - what?

Freeloaders? Socialists?

Victims of a broken system which needs to be fixed.

Throwing a trillion dollars at it is not fixing it.

There's a difference between "promoting general welfare" and babying the population with welfare handouts.

How do you 'promote general welfare'? Let's leave out the pejorative 'babying' as if somehow those who accept welfare are all demanding ne'erdowells by the way, that's simply using right wing rhetoric to demonize what is essentially assistance for those falling on hard times who would otherwise perhaps literally starve to death.

Or perhaps you welcome the notion of bringing back the poor houses?

Considering the folks that wrote the Constitution, "promote general welfare," more likely than not, means doing what's good for Colonial industry. The original Constitution was written by white men of property, for white men of property. After all, they just fought a war, to free themselves from the restrictions on free commerce imposed by the Crown.

I thought it was totally bad form to interpret the constitution as merely something that pertained to 'privileged whitefolks' or 'outdated arms technology' and the like? I understood said constitution has withstood the test of time and can be viewed through the modern lens with no problems. Perhaps I have been misled?

Yes you have. I believe a document should be read, and interpeteted, with some comprehension of the folks that wrote it. That doesn't mean what was written, once written, is impermiable, but some understanding of the issues and times that produced it are important.

If the document was perfect, it wouldn't have needed the first ten amendments before it was even ratified, nor the twenty some odd amememdents added over the next 200 years. But, it has stood the test of time, although it has been somewhat perverted over the centuries. Perhaps we can blame John Marshall for that, or praise him: He is in great part responsible for the "flexibility" of the Constitution, not the original authors nor the signators.

Freeloaders? Socialists?

I dare you to call a person who has worked all their lives, paid taxes and done their part for the Great Wheel of American Captialism anything less than what they are - a taxpayer.

I would strongly advise them to find another job. If they dont wanna do that, then he!! just become medicaid eligible. Or you could just sit around and complain about how tough things are.

Lets start on simple things, like your mail. Do you use the USPS? How about schools? Did you attend public school growing up or have you sent any of your kids to public school?

I am not "dependant" on either one of those.

You never attended a public school and have never used the US Postal Service?

USPS is a fuckin statutory monopoly that makes it illegal for anyone else to deliver letter mail!

Funding for public schools is tied to local property taxes, not Federal taxes.

Thanks for what? You've either used the Postal Service or not. It doesn't matter whether you oppose it. All that makes you is a hypocrite. And for the record, you said no government. That would include all government unless you are now saying local and state government is ok to be dependent on, but not Federal.
