Some basic questions about health care

24 members have voted

  1. 1. When your primary care physician sees you and writes you a prescription, what should he/she charge?

    • He/she should charge their actual cost of providing service and not one penny more. No one should make a profit on health care. The physician should find another way to put food on the table for his/her family.
      3
    • He/she should charge a very small amount more than their actual cost of providing service. I realize there has to be some profit in health care, or else why would people be doctors in the first place? But there's no reason they should be any better off than your average plumber. It's not like anyone forced them to do all those years of med school.
      11
    • He/she should charge whatever he/she feels is appropriate. I, as the customer, should have the choice to see any doctor I want. They have a right to make as much money as they can and I have a right to see whichever doctor I want. This may end up costing more, but it's fair. And people will actually go to med school so we won't have a shortage of doctors.
      10
  2. 2. Who should pay for your health care?

    • I should pay for my own health care either directly or through an insurance pool. It's not fair to force others to subsidize my care.
      13
    • I shouldn't have to buy insurance and I shouldn't have to pay for my own care. Health care is a right. The taxpayers should pay. After all, we're all in this together.
      9
    • I'm willing to buy insurance but my costs should also be borne by taxpayers outside of my insurance pool. After all, we're all in this together!

So you quite literally have no other options?

Yeah pretty much. Unless I want to go sit at the walk in clinic for like 3 hours and get told there's nothing they can do except give me an expensive prescription... since prescriptions aren't covered and I have no insurance.

I can't wait to move to the US and get on my fiance's plan with Kaiser.

You'll find whether you end up with long waits or not in the US depends a lot on where you live. I've never had to wait where I live, for anything. But I have friends who live in upstate NY and the waits there are pretty bad.

Maybe it's because the Canadians who can pay for it cross the border and hog their health care, who knows.

Just one more question.

If you're concerned about the rash, why not go and wait 3 hours? Even if you saw your doctor in 3 months and assuming you still had the rash, you'd still get a prescription.

Just like in Tampa - I once waited 3 months for a dental cleaning. I also remember a few months wait to get in to see my OBGYN. It all depends on where you are. Now, where I am (smaller city) I can call one day and be seen the next or within a few days, year round without fail.

It comes and goes so it doesn't concern me much. It's mostly bad when I wake up from sleeping at night.

Trying a few other things before I go bore myself to death in a clinic.

I had some sort of tropical rash that affected me at night when I came back from the Philippines, especially on my legs. I used an antifungal spray (Tinactin), and it disappeared right away.

In a truly free market, you could open up your own health clinic and wear a bone necklace, offering your services to the less knowledgeable.
