Hi Everybody,

I want to apply for my AOS and I see that I need an official copy of marriage certificate to do so.

I got married last week and to get that copy,I need to apply for it and it will take around 2 weeks, if not more, to get it.

Is there anything else I can put in the AOS package instead of that?

Thanks a lot!

Rather than an official copy of the marriage certificate, you need a copy of the official marriage certificate (I know they sound the same but they're not). If you have the marriage certificate in your hands now - just make a copy of it for the AOS.

If you have nothing, you'll need to wait until you get it, then make a copy of it to send with the AOS.

Unfortunately there is nothing that can replace your marriage certificate.

I called them everyday a week after the officiant mailed it out ,tell them its for immigration purposes and that you need it right away.

The lady i last talked with was very understanding and mailed it to me the next day.

Just call and call and call again.

Hi thank you for your early reply.

I should be getting the marriage certificate within 2 days, so a copy of that will be enough?!

The reason I am asking, is because I want to start working and get AP as soon as possible, but as I understand, if you file for those separetly, you need to pay around 600 dollars whereas if you apply for them at the same time as you apply for AOS, then it is included in the price ( around 1000 dollars).

Am I correct?

Thank you so much!

Copy is fine - if you get asked to an interview, bring the original then.

You are correct - don't file the EAD and/or AP before filing the I-485 (otherwise you'll pay the additional fees - plus your EAD card would expire when your i-94 does).

Thanks guys,

Doing what I can to get the marriage certificate mailed to me as soon as possible so I can start that process.

Take care!

A tip for others who have yet to get married: (valid in many states, check yours to be sure)

After your ceremony, the judge or marriage-official (who ever it is) will sign the marriage license. This person will usually send this in to the County Clerk's office (or whichever agency handles marriages in your state) where it is recorded, then a marriage certificate is issued and sent to you.

To speed this along - it can certainly be possible (we did it) to ask for the signed license so we could go have it recorded ourselves and get the marriage certificate issued right then and there. In our case, we got the certificate within a couple of days (there was a weekend in between). Otherwise it would have taken a couple of weeks to go through all the channels...
