we are in the process of getting all the documents for packet 3 translated into english and had a question about the police certificate.

On the instruction page it says that the certificates are valid for 12 months from the date of issuance but when Sveta took them to the translation bureau in Minsk they said they are only valid for 3 months. Who do we believe? Im going with what it says on the instruction sheet from the embassy.

Go with the sheet from the Embassy.

No matter what validity the actual certificate may state, the Embassy will accept the certificate as valid for 12 months from the date of issuance.

The validity stated on the certificates in Russia can vary depending on where issued and by whom.

No matter what validity the actual certificate may state, the Embassy will accept the certificate as valid for 12 months from the date of issuance.

For the purposes of obtaining your visa... that's the only validity that matters.

1 year:

6. Police certificates in all names as well as all dates of birth ever used. Police certificate must contain references to each place (subject to the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation) in which the applicant lives or has lived for more than six months since attaining the age of 16. This includes localities where applicants have lived during university studies. If the applicant was on military service, he/she should bring the certificate from the local draft board. If an applicant has lived abroad for more than one year, a police certificate must also be submitted from the country in which he/she lived.
Police certificate validity is one year since the date of issuance.

Once again, folks, when something is issued by ANYONE, it is valid for the amount of time the embassy says it's valid, not the issuing agency. If the embassy will take it for six months, it's good for six months, even if it says it expires after three. If they say it's good for a year, well then, it's good for a year.

Translations don't just all the sudden become invalid. What's the expiration date on a language? Surely it's more than a year!

Not true slim. When submitting examples of Elizabethan poetry as evidence of our mutual love for all things Elizabeth and poetry-ish, our translations were roundly rejected as being "expired." I guess original translations by none other than Sir Walter Scott just weren't good enough for those low-brow ignoramuses.

well, it says "12 months from date of issuance" on the Instructions for Immigrant/Fiance Visa Applicants from the embassy in Warsaw so we're goin' with that.

Sveta got her medical exam done yesterday with clean bill of health and also all the documents are now in english. Found out the NVC has forwarded our stuff on to Warsaw so its starting to get down to crunch time at long last!

If you outlive your language, more power to you.
