As for respect, if you don't recognize the gun owners that try to demand it rather than earn it, then more fool you. You would do far better to quit worrying about every single thing regarding gun ownership rules as if somehow the fact that you are allowed to own a gun preserves your way of life and worry more about ensuring that more people engage actively and intelligently in the political process. Here's an example, simply calling the opposition names and being part of the divisive hate brigade is not intelligent or effective in maintaining an activee political discourse.

Dont underestimate their idealogy. Yes it would be political suicide in most districts. But when they have a strong belief of what they think is good for the citizens because they are educated and a level above the peasants then you have problems.

Case in point, read the thread about the congressman in NY who would vote for a single pay program on healthcare despite what the people of his distrct want. See, he thinks he knows what is best for his followers.

Politicians are elected on campaign platforms that reflect positions on a range of different policies. If you vote for these people there is some implied support of the positions that they stood on when they ran for election. You can't suddenly cry ignorance and throw up your arms when these guys act on their declared intentions.

But this is all by the by - the Obama administration isn't going to do away with the second amendment. All that's likely to happen is that a few restrictions might (might - because it didn't go so well last time) be placed on certain types of firearms. If it needs pointing out - there are already some restrictions on the types of weapons you can legally buy - noone (that I know of) is bemoaning how terribly unfair and unconstitional it is that they can't legally buy a rocket launcher or an anti-tank rifle.
