As I was reading an example of the Packet 3/4 email that the Sydney Consulate sends, I noticed it asks for proof of engagement. I am going to guess that most, if not all Consuls ask for this....so, what did you take to show this? Off the top of my head I am going to show my engagement ring and a copy of the receipt for it, pictures from our engagement dinner, and emails in which we discuss our wedding plans and such. That would be sufficient, right? Along with ongoing relationship proof, of course. Keep in mind that my fiance and I aren't going to be seeing each other until I touch down at LAX with my visa in hand.

I showed them the ring receipt and of course she was wearing the ring for the interview. No problem for us.

I have a couple of engagement cards from both my grandmothers and an email from my future mother-in-law that basically says how happy she is her son *finally* got his act together, lol... I don't think the Sydney consulate is a tough one but I'm taking those along just in case. I don't know if Jesse will let me see the ring receipt but I will definitely be wearing the ring at the interview :) We aren't planning on having an engagement party because we're saving money for the wedding so we're relying on other proofs.

July 2007 - met Jesse at a beach party held by mutual friends in Long Island, NY

May 2008 - J-1 visa expired, had to move back to Australia

July 2008-September 2008 - lived with Jesse for three months in Staten Island, NY

March 2009 - Jesse comes to Australia for 3 weeks

April 2009 - Engaged!

05/20/09 - I-129F petition mailed in

05/22/09 - NOA1!

05/25/09 - touch

09/09/09 - NOA2!

10/01/09 - due to fiance's illness, we are abandoning pursuit of K-1 at this point. Packet 3 received from consulate but won't be returned.

I think you applying for a fiancé visa is enough as proof of engagement. I don't see why you should proof that you're engaged since you HAVE to be engaged for this visa. Proof of bonafide relationship on the other hand is very important. A baby is not always proof of your relationship with the petitioner. As for me, I'll be bringing:

- my engagement ring

- the reciept

- my other ring I got for Valentines day (with his name and the date on it, The date we told eachother how we felt.)

- my necklace (with his name and date on it. Different date, this time the date of when we first met irl)

- The letter I send him

- the one he sended me back

- emails

- maybe some msn conversations

- Photo's of him and me

- Photo's of the place where we want to get married

- Photo's of him, our friends and me

- Pictures of Halloween with our friends

- Emails of our friends

- And the rest that is necasarry.

Love is patient and kind;

it is not jealous or conceited or proud;

love is not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable;

love does not keep a record of wrongs;

love is not happy with evil, but is happy with the truth.

Love never gives up; and its faith, hope, and patience never fail.

Love is eternal.

i brought cards i had been given, of course wearing my ring, brought statement from witnesses of my engagement as proof of engagement as well as letter of intent, then pictures and stuff for proof of ongoing relations. MTL consulate letters asked for both proof of engagement and on-going relations but the interviewer never asked me to show him anything at all.

My immigration lawyer said that we did not need to be engaged prior to the interview, but it was imperative that PROOF OF RELATIONSHIP be established and seemd to put a bit more emphasis on the Intent to Marry letter than the sample letter presented here on VJ. It might depend on the individual consulate or the individual interviewing officer that day, but supposedly the "official" guidelines do not require an actual engagement. However, I wanted to formalize my intent with my fiancee, so we are officially engaged with ring, family party, etc. and photos to boot.

5/20/08 Met through a mutual friend in Medellin

7/02/08 - 10/27/08 Visited 5 times

12/08/08 6th Visit Medellin (gave "Promise" ring to be exclusive)

1/22/09 - 6/21/09 4 more visits. 6/22/09 GOT ENGAGED!

7/25/09 11th Visit Met in Panama

9/19/09 12th Visit Met in Medellin for Dial Del Amor y Amistad

6/23-7/21 Gathered paperwork and applied for I-129F 7/24/09 USCIS acknowledges Receipt of I-129F application NOA1

9/28/09 NOA2 received!!! Only 66 days! 10/02/09 NSC Received and completed Application and sent to Bogota

10/02/09 Embassy received application (my lawyer is two weeks behind informing me - time line information learned on 10/15/09)

10/09/09 Embassy sent out Package 3 10/15/09 Package 3 not received - downloaded forms from website.

10/16/09 Submitted DS-2100 and Ds-230 to apply for interview date. 10/23/09 Received Interview date (had to call DOS)

12/09/09 Interview - VISA GRANTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1/07/10 Arrived in Miami, cleared Immigration with no problems. Arrived in Charlotte to a freaking cold spell 55 degrees colder than Dora has ever experienced.

Letter if intent to marry. Sample here on VJ is fine. That is all we showed (it was all we had to show).

Vika brought me, and her ring, and about a ton of pictures, email, and other stuff that the consular officer didn't even look at. The lesson was that fiance' at interview trumps all paper proof (at least in Kiev - I realize some embassies are different). Good Luck!

I am under the impression that the petitioner is not allowed to be present at the interview, in Moscow and most other embassies. I did not know you could do it in Kiev.
