You could also try using Pennytalk whose rates are much cheaper than traditional cell phone companies. $0.49 for the connection and around $0.05 per minute for the call.

I use this to hte UK all the time and have no problems.

Hi Christera,

I had T-Mobile and also hated it. I had horrible service and would drop a lot of calls. I switched to Verizon and never had a problem with them.

I've had a different experience. I've been with T-Mobile for 7 years now and like their customer service. If I'm going over on my minutes or messages and call them, they give me extra. Also, I like the price for their plans compared to others. I get 1000 anytime minutes, unlimited nights & weekends, for $39.99. That was the best price I found for a major carrier.

As far as a smartphone, TMo has the Google phone. I don't have one, but my coworker who does loves it.

Regarding the coverage, I agree with what Nik+Heather said: whether calls drop depends on where you are. My examples: T-Mobile worked great for me when I lived in Oklahoma, Austin, & Houston. My brother & sister lived in Rustin, LA (small city in the north) and TMobile didn't work for them, so they switched. In New Orleans, TMobile works fine if I'm in the main part of the city, but I get fewer bars if I go away from the central part. The point is, it varies and probably does with any carrier.

...

Some companies offer 2 week trial periods, and will refund your fees and such. Ask about it when you are shopping around, then make use of it - go everywhere you want to have signal and try it out. Or - spend a month on a prepay phone. Some of them are only ~$50, so about as much as you'd pay for a month anyway.

That is also a good point. My cousin did this: tried out about 3 different companies and saw which one had the best signal/service/phones where she lived & went with the best one.
