The more and more I deal with these forms, the more questions I have, haha.

This is about the 5 years of employment history for my fiancee. She's German and we will be writing down one of her schools to cover the 5 year requirement. The name of the school is totally German, and someone who doesn't know any German would have not a clue what it says.

So... Do I need a certified translation for this? It's just the name of the school, I will list her occupation as "student".

No need to certify the translation of a school or company name on an immigration form. Certified translations are for official documents like birth certificates, marriage certificates and divorce decrees.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...

We didn't translate the schools - I just included the basic 'American' level/equivalent of the school after its name (i.e., High school, University, etc.) - no problems.

I couldn't let them think Gymnasium meant Karin played sports the whole time in school...(even though the Consulate would know what it meant)

The translation only needs to be done by someone competent to do so. That can be you for example. I would just write the name in English on the form.

If you decide you need a seperate translation attach a page with the following:

The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

Certification by Translator

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.

Signature_________________________________

Date Typed Name

Address
