First Named storms of the Season formed

The first named storm systems of the 2009 year have formed out in the Atlantic. Here is information about each of them, including trajectories. While it is still early days there is a possibility of these systems starting to affect the US in about 5 days:

It's so late in the year to still be at the beginning of the alphabet. I've seen reports that this will be a mild year for hurricanes. Hope that's true. I don't want to be making up school during the Christmas holidays.

A lot of the Gulf coast region is experiencing drought conditions. Tropical activity has its pluses and minuses. Most hurricanes and tropical storms cause localized damage near the center and especially on the coastal areas. But the rains they bring can be widespread and welcome away from the center and inland. Damage along the coast can turn into welcome rains inland. There is an upside to tropical weather.

I was going to say Atlantic. We are up to at least Florence in the Pacific. It's the El Nino. Going to be a rough winter out west.

hmm, and a third potential tropical storm on its way already in the Caribbean:

"Satellite imagery, radar loops and surface analysis showed a large area of thunderstorms over the southeast Gulf of Mexico. This thunderstorm activity is in association with the interaction between a tropical wave and a trough of low pressure. This entire weather system is getting its act together and surface pressures have been falling in the area for the past 3 to 6 hours or so. Radar imagery also indicated a mid level circulation associated with this system, which is designated Invest 91L. Invest 91L is tracking generally northwestward at a forward speed of 13 to 14 mph and this system may be on the coast of Mississippi and Alabama by tomorrow evening at about this time.

Personally, I think Invest 91-L will acquire tropical depression status in the next 12 hours or so and may reach tropical storm status before moving inland tomorrow evening. The main threat from this system will be heavy rainfall and flooding from the rain. With that said, this system will need to be watched very closely and it should not be discounted. Tropical systems in the Gulf of Mexico during the middle of August can develop and intensify very rapidly, especially over water temperatures that are near 90 degrees!!

Well I certainly have appreciated the fact that it has been much quieter this year. At this time last year, we had TS Fay sitting on top of us.

Yeah, that is a good site as well. I like the large format view of ocean temperatures. You can already see TS Bill taking on hurricane properties.

TS Fay was just a big rain storm I didn't mind that one at all...
