An interesting tidbit on immigration in Canada:

RUNAWAY BRIDES (AND GROOMS): Jilted Canadian lovers are pushing for a change in immigration laws after being ditched by foreign brides and grooms who dump them soon after using them to get to the country. "Their unwitting Canadian sponsors invest not only their hearts but thousands of dollars in paperwork, long-distance phone calls and airfare," writes Toronto Sun columnist Ms. Michele Mandel. "They also mortgage their future: To sponsor their immigrant spouses here, they must agree to financially support them for three years." A victims' group has presented a 20,000-signature petition to parliament requesting that permanent residence no longer be automatic for immigrants sponsored by their Canadian spouses. Instead, they prefer a law that mirrors the U.S., where marriages must last three years before foreign spouses gain citizenship.

A lot of these laws probably should be tightened up to get up to speed with the times. Even in the USA. The internet has probably increased the opportunity for foreign marriages and given people with less than honorable intentions a greater opportunity to immigrate that was previously available. The laws need to reflect that. Both in Canada and the USA.

In some cases it seems that some individuals fight harder to stay in the USA than they do to save their short lived marriages. It makes one wonder whether the foreigner was marrying a spouse or a country.

I really doubt that tightening up the laws would impact legitimate marriages and for that reason I think it is a good idea.

I think that Canada already did away with a fiancee visa... so this leaves only spousal visas. Not sure if there is any impact from this change causing some of the issues mentioned.

Immigrating your conjugal partner, common-law spouse, or spouse is the same visa. I don't know the precedure for a fiance you're not sleeping with.
