Not to be indelicate, but perhaps you could explain the background you have briefly. You sound as if your families have a strong religious, traditional background and that your girlfriend's family in particular would want things to take their usual path when getting engaged and married.

Some religions have a 'betrothal period' for example. which is a none-legally binding ceremony in which each partner is promised ot one another. it's NOT a wedding.

Immigration can complicate things since there are rules around when you can get married (K1's get married after entering the US for example) and the fact that you should have visited one anotehr and gotten to know eachother in the previous 2 years
