At the interview, the officer called me back first. He asked open ended questions about how we met, and how our relationship developed for about five minutes. Then he brought Vika back and asked the same things to see if our stories matched. He then told us the green card was approved, and told Vika to immediately destroy the AP and EAD documents when the green card arrives, as it is illegal to have both (EAD being a non-immigrant document, and GC being based on immigrant status). Vika was told that under no circumstances was she allowed to vote (duh), and that she should take care not to let the DMV register her when she gets her license, as this is a deportable offence and no waiver or appeal is possible. Then he warned us about the deadline for lifting conditions, and let us go. Total of maybe 15 minutes.

We had never heard about the voting issue, or the need to get rid of the EAD and AP documents. Wanted to pass it along.

Thanks guys! We made rather merry last night, and are looking forward to getting that green card in the mail before Vika heads off to Ukraine next month. This community, and this forum in particular, have provided a tremendous amount of support and encouragement to us both - not to mention some great "how to" advice on the process. We really appreciate the well wishes, and are happy to help out any one else in the process if we can. :star:

Sounds great Brad, congratulations! You actually had a few more questions than we did but hardly sounds like an inquisition. :)

The voting thing is curious. Actually, depending on state and jurisdiction Vika, or other permanent resident, CAN vote in local elections. The federal government cannot dictate who is allowed to vote in local elections, and of course they need to be registered. Strange. Obviously not an Obama supporter.

Good luck

They were talking about registering for voting .... in many states it's done at DMV whenever someone gets their first license or ID card.

Exactly. In Kentucky they apparently do it automatically at some offices. Maybe jury duty pools are created from the voter registration records. Any way, if the statement is made, or a question is asked and gets past the immigrant for any reason the effect is the same, according to the officer that interviewed us.

Good news, Brad. And might I say, Kentucky sure is looking nice this time of year!

Nice and hot  C'mon down and have a brew! Or maybe we can meet in the middle somewhere. PM me when your mailbox isn't full.

My old'e Kentucky home...... hmmmm

Ohhhh noooo....if Gary and Alla will be going down there (or up there from where I am), then we'll have to come over too :rofl: (I'm inviting ourselves)....

Gary, there's a very nice hotel, right in downtown Louisville by the river, near the slugger

museum....we can still catch a baseball game at the River Bat's stadium (really nice stadium though) and maybe a sheppard's pie with some Guiness later on a Irish pub not too far from the ball field...... :bonk:

Anyway, in all seriousness now....We've been chatting for a while now, helping each other, going through almost the same process...wouldn't be nice to have an all get together weekend?!?!?! I mean, to meet in person and finally shake hands and enjoy a BBQ or something?!?

Thoughts?!?!?!!?

Brad & Vika, once again...we are soo happy for you.... soon it will be our turn for Nadiya's 2 year GC...

Have a good one guys !!
