Hi all!

I have a question regarding changing your last name... We had our wedding last weekend and I want to change my last name to my husband's. What do I need to do? We will be going through AOS now and I want to apply with my new last name but do I need to do something before sending in the papers to legally change my name here? I have applied for a SSN in my maiden name (before the marriage) but have not received it yet.

Any help is appreciated!

Congratulations on your wedding!

The marriage certificate shows your name change. "If you are recently married and would like to change your maiden name, you don't need to file a petition with the court. Instead, your marriage certificate serves as your "proof," and you just need to update the Department of Motor Vehicles, banks, credit cards, etc." http://www.legalzoom.com/name-change-guide...ame-change.html

I did not go through the K1 route so I am not sure about how to change it with regards to the SSN. According to the link above you have to fill out Form SS-5 and get it to the Social Security Office. But like I said, I haven't been through that myself.

If you haven't already done so you probably want to send a copy of the marriage certificate to the tax department (Skatteverket - Folkbokföringen) in Sweden so they can register you as married.

I too recently got married.

I took a certified copy of the marriage certificate into the bank so that we could set up a joint bank account in my new name, and also used it to have my married name on our rental lease.

With regards to the SSN. I applied for this in my maiden name 19 days ago (still not arrived yet!) To then have this changed to your married name, you must go back into the SSN office with official proof of your marriage (certified copy again).

I am sending off my AOS forms next week. All will have my married name on.

It's been a quick and relatively painless journey thanks to tireless research, dumb luck and this community :)

DONE with USCIS for a while :)

FYI I was able to go to the SS office with my SSN (in my maiden name), show them the marriage certificate and they change my name. New SSN will be received within 2 weeks!
