Congressman Leonard Boswell (D-Des Moines, Iowa) held a town hall meeting in Sigourney this afternoon.

...

During a brief question-and-answer session with reporters after the event, Boswell recounted a recent meeting involving Obama and the so-called "Blue Dog Democrats" (Boswell's a Blue Dog). The subject matter: health care reform. Boswell claims Obama said he's willing to be a one-term president if that's what it takes to get health care and energy reform.

"The president (said), 'I'm not going to kick the can down the road.' And he said that and I said, 'Well, that's something I'm kind of used to from southern Iowa, you know. I know about kicking the can down the road.' And he said, 'No, if it makes me a one-term president, I'm going to, we're going to take it on because the country is in need of us taking this on.' I respected that very much."

Oh Jez, here we go with the "Savior" complex again.

He's a friggin Politician from Chicago who has never even held a real job.... it's a little late to try to come of as the "sacrificial Lamb" don'cha think?

At any rate he has a long time to recover from this.

Interesting analysis from the panel of experts.

 It's like getting analysis from Ann Coulter & Rush Limbaugh. However :ot2: I do feel that Obama should have worked harder to get bi-partisan support for healthcare reform before moving forward. Now you have a bunch of people who don't have a clue about what they are protesting, except that Obama supports it & of course that means it's socialized medicine.

Disagree.

There would be no 'bi-partisan' support no matter how hard it was worked. The only way to get this thing done is to do it while the majority is on the Hill.

Indeed- Obama could have done that 1), 2), 3) point thingy to explain what's in the writing since apparently some 'see things' that isn't really there.

That said the president definitely could have taken a much more active, hands on approach in calming peoples' irrational fears with some hard logic. Even though we all know from experience that details, however truthful, tend to fall on deaf ears even in those willing to entertain them for what they are at times. Can't talk about the irrational crowd because they are unpredictable in their lunacy... yet predictable in their drive to object.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Sure the right wing wants to see Obama fail... they don't give a rats #### if that means the country fails too. I was referring to the Blue Dog Democrats & moderate Republicans. Obama should have tried harder to work a plan that they supported.

By definition though that would be impossible- given the nature of the opposition just to oppose.

I believe he would have done much better going right to the constituency instead and letting Congress match the details.

With moderate Republican & Blue Dog support I'm pretty sure Obama would have the votes needed. More importantly you would (hopefully) get a plan that most Americans would support.

That could happen. More importantly... Americans would be more invested in their own politics. Politicians really need to talk WITH their constituents instead of lying to them to simply fearmonger.

 But apparently it's more fun to yell & scream back & forth and blame the other side. You're seeing it nationally and it's alive & well on VJ too.

Yep. The GOP knows and has known for a long time that if we get another social program as significant as Social Security and Medicare, it would be another thorn in their side, ideologically. It makes it hard for them to sell to the American people that the government is good for nothing when people know firsthand, the benefits of such programs.
