Registering for the Selective Service

My husband has decided to return to school and applied for financial aid. He received a letter in the mail today from the financial aid department at the college he plans on attending, telling him that he must submit his Selective Service number to them before his application can be processed. They handwrote a note on the typed form telling him how to register if he has not yet registered.

So, here is the problem. My husband is 46 years old. My understanding is that Selective Service is for men 18-25. Everything I have found so far on the internet tonight supports that.

Is the financial aid dept. at his college just mistaken (my polite way of saying, a bit dense ... since his DOB was on his application for aid) ... or is there something I am missing and he really is supposed to register?

My guess is you (he) needs to contact the finacial aid office, and show your husband was never in the US when he was of the age required to file with the selective service. If he did not register with the selective service, and was required to do so at the time, he is ineligible for federal financial aid.

it sure sounds like they aren't too bright at that college

ATTENTION, UNDOCUMENTED MALES

& IMMIGRANT SERVICING GROUPS!

If you are a man ages 18 through 25 and living in the U.S., then you must register with Selective Service. It’s the law. You can register at any U.S. Post Office and do not need a social security number. When you do obtain a social security number, let Selective Service know. Provide a copy of your new social security number card; being sure to include your complete name, date of birth, Selective Service registration number, and current mailing address; and mail to the Selective Service System, P.O. Box 94636, Palatine, IL 60094-4636.

Be sure to register before your 26th birthday. After that, it’s too late!

MEN CANNOT REGISTER AFTER REACHING AGE 26

WHAT CAN YOU DO IF YOU DID NOT REGISTER AND ARE NOW 26 OR OLDER?

If you have passed your 26th birthday and are now being denied eligibility for Federal student financial aid, Federal job training, or Federal employment, or are having difficulty obtaining U.S. citizenship because you failed to register, you have the the following recourse available to you: Explain to the official handling your case (for example, a student financial aid officer) the reasons for your failure to register with Selective Service. A non-registrant may not be denied any benefit if he can "show by a preponderance of evidence" that his failure to register was not knowing and willful. Offer as much evidence supporting your case, and as much detail, as possible.

HOW TO GET AN OFFICIAL SELECTIVE SERVICE RESPONSE SAYING YOU WERE OR WERE NOT REQUIRED TO REGISTER

If you did not register with Selective Service, and are now a man over age 25, you may be ineligible for certain Federal or state programs and benefits, including U.S. citizenship. Some agencies may ask you to provide an official response from the Selective Service indicating if you were or were not required to register. To receive such a letter from the Selective Service System, please call 1-847-688-6888. Your call will be answered by an automated voice processing system. Please refrain from pressing any numbers, and an operator will soon come on the line to assist you. You may also send a written request to the Selective Service System at P.O. Box 94638, Palatine, IL 60094-4638. Ask for a "status information" letter. You will have to describe, in detail, the circumstances you believe prevented you from registering and provide copies of documents showing any periods when you were hospitalized, institutionalized, or incarcerated occurring between your 18th and 26th birthdays. If you are a non-citizen, you may be required to provide documents that show when you entered the United States. Please include your name, Social Security Number, date of birth, and return address.

just found this

NOTE: Immigrants who did not enter the United States or maintained their lawful non-immigrant

status by continually remaining on a valid visa until after they were 26 years old were never required

to register. Also, immigrants born before 1960 who did not enter the United States or maintained their

lawful non-immigrant status by continually remaining on a valid visa until after March 29, 1975, were

never required to register.

Thanks for the responses. Hubby will call the college tomorrow and hopefully, it will be taken care of with a simple phone call. If not, at least now he knows how to get an official Selective Service response saying he didn't have to register.

I had fun getting benefits under the Montgomery GI bill, since I was a bonus baby, and later commissioned. Your representative in Congress usually has someone in their office knowledgable of the ins and outs of student aid when you get bouced between agencies. Don't hesitate to call your distict office if the financial aid office can't figure it out.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

What a crock this selective service registration is. Son receives a post card, we know who you are, where you live, and if you don't return this post card in so many days, we are coming over to pound the living ####### out of you. Idiots are not even up to date with the current state of warfare, still back in WW I or II where it takes at least two years to train a guy. In this nuclear age, end of the world can come within minutes. This program is over 25 years, never was used, but have to deal with the dimwits at the USCIS and universities because of it, and today, can do it in five seconds on line.

My son did want to join, told him we never used all that fancy exercise equipment you see today, just ran with a backpack full of 65 pound full of rocks. He ran 15 miles a day all summer like that to really get into shape. Went to join, but rejected because due to a thyroid condition, has to pop a pill in his month with a two buck a month prescription. I guess they didn't want to foot that two buck extra a month expense.

He did finish college instead, and even got a job with one of those private mercenary firms where he could shoot people, in the military, you can't shoot until you are shot at. But he quit that job after a couple of weeks, discovered an immorality in this country he could not deal with. So teaching kids instead.

This country is unbelievable with the number of idiots we have making our laws.
