Colorism is a big problem in most countries. Truth be told she will be judged by some due to the color of her skin and her slanted eyes. Yes America is made up of all different races and nationalities; however, racism is alive and well. And just because we have a Black President America has a long way to go.

If your wife is Vietnamese, the Vietnamese are obsessed about their own skin color. Someone who is too dark is thought to be either poor or from the country because those people tend to have to work outside. Women in Saigon go to great lengths to cover up when motorbiking in the city so that they won't get dark. Ever seen those long long gloves they sell in the street?

Just try to reassure her that there is nothing wrong with her skin color. Not matter what her color is, there will be someone who doesn't like it. And no matter what color she is she can't cover the fact that she not from America. She may face racism or xenophobia, but then again she may not. I would try to handle it organically. Don't ignore it, but talking about it too much may make her worry unnecessarily. Just address it as it comes up.

Racism was an issue for my hubby. There is discrimination in Ethiopia, but not typically based on your skin color. It was a difficult adjustment for him. I'm an African-American woman, but there are differences in the experiences of men and women in America. We just keep an open conversation about race in America. My hubby is a pretty positive guy and likes people, he's made friends with a lot of different people and he's experienced a few racists incidents. They are hurtful, but we do our best to move past them.

She will have to buy fewer parasols (she still calls them

umbrellas) once she gets here.:huh:  :rolleyes:

 I joke with Rin all the time about her being Mexican! And tell your wife not to worry, everyone here raves about how beautiful Rin's skin is (and her hair). Even have had a few people ask her during the winter months if she goes to the tanning salon!

A few years back she had an AFS (American Field Service) exchange student in her house for a year.

He was close to her only son's age and he went to her HS where the language of instruction is Thai.

He was able to learn enough Thai to do this in a very short time and that impressed me.

Julio is from Bolivia and Thai girls found him irresistable.

When she took him to the Grand Palace for the tour, she told him not to say a word and he was

admitted for the Thai price instead of the farang price because he could pass for Thai.

I've been thinking how somehow I could pass for Thai but let's say that's a "work in progress...."

True story.

well maybe if you get one of them spray on Tan about 25 time you could pass as Thai

come to think of it, It could save us some money on the next trip if I get a spray job!!

Oh wait then we will have to give Chase a spray on Tan. That would not go over good with Nan.

i guess my problem is related..

i was so excited to tell my fiance that i will give his mom

bags and some stuff from my native country

a good present to his relatives when i get to the US.. but he told me

not to waste time on such things coz

we will just buy her mom things when i get to the US

after meeting them..

He told me he doesn't want

his mother to get shock if she will learn that

we will get married..he doesn't want to surprise her,

i am the first asian or not an american

to join their family.. his mother knows we are gf/bf

but still told him why not find a girl from their place instead.

my fiance told me his mom cannot understand why

he needs to find a gf from asia when there are

lots of white girls in their area.

but the good thing is my fiance reassured me

he loves me and he don't care if they will not like me

he said the important thing is we will build our own family

and he will depend me..but i'm still worried.

i'm thinking how will he tell them that we will get married?

this made me feel sad...and now i don't know how will i react

when i see them in person..
