They're virgins when they get married; it's HER MOTHER who drags the bloody sheet out into the streets (to prove she kept her virginity until her wedding night) and through the entire neighborhood.

Kind of OT, but I've wondered how this practice is in line with humility and privacy regarding sexual things and such.

i'm just wondering how that really proves anything - maybe the bride was on her period? :unsure:

Charles, I can't speak for everywhere in MENA, but in Egypt marriage customs are different. First the couple signs the marriage contract, then there's a wedding party. Those events could be the same day or they could be months apart. It only takes a little planning to make sure "Aunt Flo" isn't around to muss the sheets, certainly not when the sheet will be on display the next day and certainly not when the groom himself takes interest in its condition.

Humility? Privacy? Honor and reputation are much higher on the list of priorities.

Unfortunately it's true but it's only in villages.
