I searched many pages in the forum before giving up and starting this thread, so sorry if it's a duplicate.

We haven't filed any paperwork or anything yet, I'm just trying to get as much info as possible before we decide what to do, and I need to know if we can get married in his country and not the US after everything is all said and done? He has a huge family and there's no way that they could all get over here for the ceremony. My family is small and we'd already planned on going over there to get married so no one's feelings get hurt. Lol. We're very new to all of this and it's completely overwhelming. I can't imagine months and months of this :( Thank you in advance for any info you can give us it's much appreciated!!

getting legally married outside the USA will result in you petitioning for a spousal visa...

A fiance(e) visa requires the alien to enter legally UNMARRIED and the legal marriage occuring inside the USA and/or its territories.

YMMV

If you're considering a K-1/Fiancé Visa - you're going to need to marry in the US.

Nothing would stop you from having a ceremony in his home country after you've married in the US (as an alternative).

You could also marry in his home country and file for a spousal visa (another alternative).

Okay, that makes sense, but I have a friend who met his Wife in the EXACT same situation I met my fiance, and the filed for the K-1 visa, got it and married in Brazil...how did they do that?!?! Lol. I'm do confused. This is already discouraging and we haven't even started yet....

Not sure how they did it - perhaps they married in the US then had a ceremony in Brazil later - or had a ceremony in Brazil then entered the US and tried their luck.

We had a ceremony here in Brazil last month and I'm having my K1 Fiance Visa interview in the end of this month. We are only LEGALLY marrying (signing papers) once I arrive in America. As long as your wedding outside the US is just a non-legal ceremony, you can still apply for a Fiance Visa (that's what the Consulate told me). Here in Brazil priests and ministers can't legally marry you, so it's fine to have a ceremony before going to the US. Good luck!
