Getting a drivers license in MI harder than a visa!

So... we go to the Secretary of State's office last night to apply for a temporary instructor's permit (its required before you can take a drivers training class). We have my fiancee's SS card and passport/visa/I-94 with us but we still have to "prove Michigan residency" by providing a bank statement, utility or credit card bill (2 items required). We are not married yet so of course we have nothing in her name yet. Wouldn't let her take the written test simply to get the learners permit.

What a pain!

It is a pain here in MN too! We just had issues with the translated docs. They tried telling us that they required more than what was on there even though the websites and books don't require it. It literally took calling the main office and escalating to a supervisor to have them call the sites supervisor so we wouldn't have any problems.

I am not too familiar with K-1 visa process. For CR-1, we took welcome letter and a letter of confirmation (basically a letter saying we applied for SS card) to prove residency in NC.

The residency question would not be a problem if we were married - 4 weeks from tomorrow for that. :-)

You may be able to add her to your bank account before you are married - we were able to do that - and then request them to mail the statement in both names to your house. You can then use that statement as proof of residency. Good luck.

Hi, I am sorry for that,I am from Michigan too, I`ve gone through that experience, but everything will be okay as long as you have all the papers, just let her study first the manual so she won`t be bored. Good luck and best wishes!
