Okay here's the sitch:

I'm capable of meeting the support requirements for the K1, and can do the I-134 and stuff. That's no problem.

My fiance has not really ever worked--until recently he was considered disabled and paid an allowance by his gov't, and though he is improving rapidly, it's obviously not easy to enter the workforce for the first time in your 30s. His current occupation will have to be listed on the DS-230 as "none."

His intended occupation in the United States will be listed as "homemaker," because that is what it is. He is really enthusiastic about it, and it will be great for us both individually and as a couple (and quite possibly as parents with young children someday). Someday he may well move on to another occupation, but for right now this is what we both want to do.

If he were a woman and I were a man, I doubt this would be a problem. He's not a woman, and I'm not a man.

So will it be a problem?

I personally feel very fortunate to be marrying someone who considers looking after a home a worthy occupation for a man, and I'm really proud of my fiance for having the openmindedness to take on this role in spite of the fact that society has traditionally assigned it to women.

But the CO won't know all that, and I doubt there will be any opportunity to discuss it. Will he or she just look at his application and suspect fraud simply because my fiance is a man whose self-image is secure enough that he thinks it'll be cool to be a "househusband"? What can I do to help address this?

Thanks,

Tigre

I am not a practicing attorney. I have a law degree and I passed the bar exam, but am not admitted to practice because I got a job in legal publishing and haven't gotten around to applying for my license yet. Publishing is great, but it does not make you qualified to give legal advice. So I don't. I just want to get married to my fella, which is why I'm here! If you need legal help, seek the advice of a licensed attorney.

Hi Tigre,

I don't think the US government will care what occupation your fiance' has. They are really only concerned that you the sponsor have income coming in and can support the one immigrating. The affidavit of support can really get you stressed I know. I have been there. Basically it is being signed by you, stating that you will pay back any accrued cost's if your "fiance/husband uses Welfare" and you will be responsible for his well being.

He can be a house husband if so choosing.

My hubby enjoyed being house husband until few months ago when he recieved his EAD.. They didn't even care what his occupation was at our interview, they were only concerned that I had the jobs I claimed to have.

good Luck,

Moondancer

Hey, some ladies would kill for a guy who thought doing housework is ok. ;)

Seriously though, if your hubby is cool with it, it's all good. Like moondancer said, the CO's are concerned about whether or not he will become a public charge once getting to the US-- and that depends on you (no pressure! ;) ) They may ask about his disability status and if the two of you have planned for it financially (until he is able to work), like with insurance and such. But again, it will mainly come down to the Affadavit of Support that you will provide.

And hey, there are more guys doing the house husband thing, either temporarily or on a more permanent basis. A friend of mine is currently working on his Masters degree, and staying home with the two kids while his wife is the one working. It suits their situation right now, and he's loving the time he gets to spend with his sons. :)

I would think that it would vary between the consulates. I am sure that in Morocco it would raise eyebrows, but then again if you sneezed funny it would as well.

As far as a personal choice, as long as it makes you both happy then what more can you want?

Maybe you can go to the UK forum and see what they say about it.

It's not as abnormal as you'd think---I've always said (since marrying mine) that every woman needs a good wife! The DAH is retired but I don't see how he ever had time for a job. He works harder than I do, keeping up the inside and outside of the house as well as being handy with the cooking, cleaning, laundry and ironing (he loves that, sick mofo).

Consulate didn't much care--the CO was glad to see that I was not "too old" to be the breadwinner. I would not even bring it up.

Tigre,

Couch potato? Gigolo? (I'll be one myself in a few short years, hope to find a better term by then.)

Shouldn't be an issue, and if the question is by some chance asked the explanation you're given in your post is a fine one.

Also, your fiance's current occupation does not have to be listed as 'none'. You might want to consider terms or phrases that more fully describe his situation, such as 'disabled [prior occupation]'.

Ok well, I am the CONSTANT worrier in the family. And we are sitting in the same position. Yet I am not scared in the least. I think it'll all be fine. And you and I should DEFINATELY count ourselves lucky for finding househubbies.

Don't stress cause it'll all work out in the end. If we can do it, you can do it! (((hugz)))

London Embassy is pretty easy to get through. As long as you have all your t's crossed and i's dotted and all the correct paperwork you should be just fine. London isn't a high fraud embassy so I doubt they will delve too much into the semantics of who should be doing the housework ;)

I agree - why would they care? All they care about is him not becoming a burden on the benefits system in the US - hence the I-134 for the USC. Same for AOS really, tho by then, if you wanted, you could say that he will 'look for employment when he is medically fit to do so..' if you thought they might dicker over his 'status' (I still say your private arrangement is your own business but I know AOS interviews can be intense for some people)
