Why are some of you using the premise that government can fix this? Where does this premise come from?

From reality. Look at other industrialized countries and realize that while affording coverage to their entire populations they spend - per capita, as share of GDP, or by any other measure, significantly less for health care than we do. Significantly less. And for the extra money spent, we're not getting more in return. In terms of physicians per capita, nurses per capita, hospital beds per capita, life expectancy, etc., we are behind the OECD averages. The only measure where we come out way on top is cost. Hence, it's a fair statement that we run the most inefficient system in the developed world.
