I think you missed it. He insinuated or at least wanted to plant the idea that doctors are deliberately neglecting a patients maintenance because it pays "a pittance" and wait until a diabetic needs his foot amputated because it pays a lot more.

That's not the point Gary - the point is that the present health care system does not have the maintenance of good health as a primary goal. An insurance driven health service is never going to achieve best health for all because there is no incentive to achieve the goal of best health. The consequences of not having best health as the main goal are far ranging, just look around you. Oh, we can argue until the cows come home as to who is responsible for this and that, but really, health care should be about preventing illness, and treating illness as early as possible but that is quite patently not what happens now.

There have been several instances that I know of where dentists, for example, have recommended unnecessary work to patients. Not quite the same thing though.

No, he is trying to instill fear and mistrust about doctors with a flat out lie. There is only one way to iterpret this. He is saying that because they get paid a "pitence" they don't do routine care in favor of the expensive consequences. Amazing you don't see a problem with his assurtions.

I'm guessing that that is not what Obama implied at all The current health care system does not favour preventative medicine, there is no incentive anywhere to achieve that as a primary goal and there will be consequences from paying doctors on the basis of procedures performed instead of health achieved - I doubt one can point fingers at doctors for deliberately sabotaging a patient's health, that's patently wrong, but the system itself leans in that direction regardless.

Went to the doc this morning cuz I had some flu like symptoms. Got there and was in the exam room within 5 minutes. Doc shows up within 10 minutes. I was concerned it might be H1N1 because I had a nasty flu last fall. He told me I wasnt exhibiting the symptoms but took a culture from my nose and had results back in 10 minutes.
