Why is this thread ridiculous?

I'll tell you why. First, the OP's question is impossible to answer. How can anyone here know if this is a case of 'wasted police time/resources?' A knowledgeable (useful) answer would require:

Knowledge of the normal procedures that have been put in place by this police force in cases of suspicious deaths AND how the police force derived its procedures.

Knowledge of the available man power at the time of the investigation and the distribution of the manpower as it pertains to the incidences in progress at that time.

Knowledge of the general performance levels of this police force and whether this incidence is indicative of their normal performance levels.

Without that, all that can be given is a speculative response which is pretty much a waste of everyone's time.

So, this begs the question, why did the OP use this incident, the 'suspected' suicide of one of his neighbours as a springboard to launch into an invective on how this is yet more proof of wasted tax dollars, irresponsible government spending blah de blah? It's not the first question that would spring to the mind of the average neighbour surely? Surely the more normal response would be shock at the actions of the suicidee, perhaps, though equally pointless, speculation as to the motivation and state of mind of this person, but surely not this?

Makes you think - at least it makes some think anyway.

Who knows?

It just wouldn't be my first thought when faced with the suicide of a neighbour - not my first, second or even third come to that. If the OP is concerned that his local police force are not efficient in their practices that is a legitimate concern but asking random strangers around the globe to speculate on whether he has a point and using the suicide as his starting point is frankly at best bizarre.

Well its not far off walking past a scene where a guy is on the roof of a building threatening to jump off and saying "let the b*stard jump, its just scandalous that you're all just standing there".

Suddenly stakeouts are a waste of money and presumably whenever there's a bank robbery siege, the cops should go do something else for a few hours until the bank robbers quit the premises ;)

I guess that's the danger of having preconceptions and moulding your surroundings so that they fit your conclusions. It's a wonder people survive from one day to the next though employing this methodology. It's a puzzle, for sure.

my neighbor did the deed ... after looking at the mass of LEO's present ... were my tax dollars being spent wisely?

but these cops are paid anyways for their shift, no matter whether they are looking at dead bodies, or giving out tickets, or eating donuts, so what's up?

with the perpetual requests for OT, more officers, etc. it is easier to understand the requests if a convention is not held at a very controlled and limited scope location. guess being in a non-gov't run business and having spent lots of time with LEOs gives me a different view of manpower requirements.

were the extra officers needed? maybe at the beginning to assess and evaluate the situation. Afterwords  sorry the extra persons standing around were purely involved in a bs session. okay ... they got still got paid if they were actually doing something else or bs'ing. just don't keep asking for OT and more manpower if there are obvious bs sessions happening. besides ... as many here on vj incorrectly believe the police are there to protect people ... guess they weren't doing a very good job of protecting people if they were bs'ing.

if departmental procedures indicate 16 officers (plus supporting medical personnel) need to be at a present for an event of this nature ... well I guess they will need to stand around outside and take turns walking the scene cause putting all 16 + medical personnel inside the persons home (where this unfortunate tragedy took place) would have made for a house full of people ... even if they left 4 outside to monitor the doors. i won't even mention the potential for spoiling the scene.

the person who chose to end her life, I feel saddened at the loss for us as neighbors, and for her friends and family. I tried to keep that part isolated and out of the question of how many people are needed for such an extended period of time to record what was a very singular, tragic, and personal event.

if someone feels this quantity of persons needed is justified for such an extended period when after the first 2 hrs 50% of the persons reporting are simply standing on the sidewalk talking amoungst themselves ... well ... it's your opinion. fwiw: it turns out it was a slow and quiet night in town ... so I guess they took an opportunity pass the time ...

Enough said.
