IMO the only way the constant rhetoric & bashing between the Republicans & Democrats is going to stop is that the moderates from both parties stand up & say enough is enough (let the far right & left tear each other apart for all I care).

The moderates are largely silent and indecisive by nature and they aren't interesting enough to get airtime. The only time they really count is at the ballot box.

Sadly the extremists do get more attention, but its like the attention a spoiled kid gets when he throws a fit when he can't have a candy bar. Without the moderates stepping in all you will get is the right sabotaging the left when they are in office & vice versa. Like I said it's a nearly impossible situation.

The Founders in the Federalist Papers said that the answer to factions is more factions so they no single group can control everything which explains why our government was designed to inhibit the government from acting rashly. Also, John Stuart Mill thought the best way to counter "wrong" speech was with free speech to counter it.

Probably wouldn't help as historically a third party is never completely neutral. Nader stole votes from the Democrats and Perot stole votes from the GOP. A third party would have to be so strong as to stand on its own and that not likely in a nation with some of the oldest surviving ruling political parties in the world.

But to be honest... I don't remember droves of protesters drowning out legitimate discussion back in the Bush era. People got to talk on both sides of the issue aisle. Here and now it seems that one side is just being silly to drown out any real chance of a legitimate discussion.

Which makes me think about what the political backlash could turn out for these folks as they continue burrowing themselves down the hole they're digging for themselves faster and faster.
