Getting a driver's license

Hello fellow VJers,

I hope somebody can enlighten me about obtaining a NV driver's license.

I am a new immigrant on IR-1 visa and haven't received my GC yet.

Can anybody tell if I can take the written and driving tests just with my SS card and IR-1 visa on my passport?

I've already asked a DMV representative what documents I would need,

but she has no clue if the IR-1 visa is good enough or I will need my GC.

I appreciate if you can share your experience in NV, especially the Las Vegas area.

I believe what they would be looking for would be the I-551 stamp that is above the visa in your passport.

We used that along with a translated birth certificate to take the written test. My husband's GC was received prior to taking the road test.

Sounds like you need your SSN and show them the stamp and you should be good to go!! Good luck!!

Proof of Identity Docs:

Certified U.S. Issued Birth Certificate or Certified Abstract (hospital copies are not accepted)

U.S. Passport (valid or expired less than 1 year)

U.S. Military Identification or Military Report of Separation

Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization

Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood

Consular Report of Birth Abroad

Permanent or Temporary Resident Card

Resident Alien Card or I-551 Receipt

Valid Foreign Passport stamped “Processed for I-551”

Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) with Visa or Passport

Permit to Reenter the U.S.

Refugee Travel Documents

Drivers who have never been licensed or those who currently hold a license from a foreign country or a U.S. territory must take vision, knowledge (written) and skills (driving) tests.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Yeah, I checked the website before and wasn't sure if the following stamp is considered to be the processed I-551 stamp by DMV officers.

You know, they usually don't have any immigration related knowledge at all.

They might want the "Processed for I-551" literally on my passport...

Oh believe me, I understand. We had issues with how they wanted the translated copies. I had to teach the guy how to do his job.

I would just go there and do the written test, they'll let you know if the documents aren't ok. You don't need the documents to do the tests... at least not in MN, you just need them when you apply for the license after both tests.

Just bring everything you have and be overly prepared. I would print out what they say on the website so you can also teach them how to do their jobs :)

You need your green card. Because they need to have the expire date which they will put on your driverslicence.

My driverslicense expires with my green card and I will need to show them my 1 year extension letter from USCIS in other to renew it.

I've experienced hard time in DMV with this in NJ.

you will actually need the Green Card to get the Drivers License issued.

you may be able to take the written exam and stuff, but when it comes to actual license, they do have to see your current status with expiration date on.

i see you have received the CG already, so you shouldn't have any issue anymore! :)

Thank you everyone,

I got my GC today! It was a little earlier than what I expected, but nothing could be better than a happy news :)

I will go to a local DMV tomorrow and figure out what tests I need to take.

I had a NV license 4 years ago, so hopefully I don't have to take the written test again.

Anyways, thank you for your help again :)
