It really depends, some wait just a few days after arriving and others wait a little longer. My husband and I were waiting a while so I called the local office who told me that his information had not been loaded from his arrival by the USCIS so they were waiting for that to happen for them to verify the documents that we submitted for the SSN.

After a few weeks I called my congressman who was able to contact the USCIS to have his info loaded and about 1 1/2 weeks later we had the card.

I would suggest calling the SSA and getting the local office's phone number to see what's going on.

Call the local SSA office and ask what's going on. Did you receive a receipt letter from them?

They should be able to look up your information and let you know where in the process you are.

If you checked off on the DS-230 that you wanted to be assigned an SSN and you have been in the United States 3 weeks or more, you need to go into a Social Security office or Card Center to find out what is going on.

Be sure to take your passport with the MRIV with I-551 stamp or I-551 card and your birth certificate.

When an individual age 18 or older indicates on Form DS-230 that he or she would like to be assigned an SSN when applying for an immigrant visa, one of three things may happen:

1. The application information is not transmitted correctly from the

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of State (DOS)

and the individual must go into a Social Security office to submit

an SSN application (Form SS-5).

2. The application information partially transmits from DHS and

DOS and the individual must go into a Social Security office. If

the exception can be corrected the SSN can be assign and card

issued. Otherwise, the individual must submit an SSN application.

3. The application information transmits correctly from DHS and DOS and

the individual is assigned an SSN and the card is mailed to address

provided to DHS for the mailing of the I-551 card.

RM 00202.315 Enumeration At Entry:

You can obtain the address and directions to the nearest Social Security office from the Social Security Office Locator, which is available on the Internet at:

http://www.ssa.gov/locator

Note: Applicants who live or receive mail in the Brooklyn, NY, Queens, NY, Phoenix, AZ, Orlando, FL, Sacramento, CA or Las Vegas, NV area MUST apply in person at one of the Social Security Card Centers.

Card Center Information:

If you have applied at a Social Security office the amount of time to be assigned an SSN is going to depend on the amount of time the SSA office needs to verify your immigration status. If it's been over a month you need to go back into the office where you applied and be sure to take your documents.
