I was thinking to convert to my husbands religion and was wondering if it would look bad if i do it now. The US embassy sent our case back for further review and we are waiting to hear something. At the present time I am living in Syria with him.

Thank you...........

Excellent question. Our interview is comming up and I was wondering the same thing. I am converting and I have a feeling they might think thats bad, but I also worry they might think its bad if we have two completely different religions. Any advise???

Interesting. Not sure I can help with what is best to do "legally"- but in my opinion, it really shouldn't matter. I am trying to think if they even asked that information on my forms. ? Just being truthful in all things is the best route to go- so if any concerns come up, just clarify them!

ah. the longing....

I have consulted many lawyers and all have agreed that religion is one of the 5 points they will look at.

Yes it does matter to the consul who interviews your spouse. I just don't know if it would look worse changing religions.

Just have a lot of proof. Anything you do together make sure to get some proof of it. Also putting it in a time line for them. Did you already get your visa to the states?

I met a man much younger than me from Syria and after several months of talking via online and by phone we decided to meet. This was my first trip abroad and I didn't want to go to Syria, so I asked him if we could meet in Jordan as I had heard they had good relationship with the U.S. My flight was delayed 7 hours and when I finally arrived in Jordan he was no where to be found. Needless to say it took a lot of people to help me to locate the hotel he was staying at. We both were so upset about losing one another. We spent several days just enjoying each others company and the day I was suppose to leave was quickly coming. He asked me to marry him, saying he doesn't want to feel that loss again. I knew how he felt. So we hurriedly got married in the couple days we had left. So then I came back to the states and set about to find a way to get him here with me. I went to a woman who was suppose to be highly qualified in visa matters. This was in 2007 and she was suppose to file the papers before the fees went up, she waited to long and they sent the forms back. I was out of the country with my husband at the time in Turkey (Istanbul) so when I got back I had to re-file again. This was in jan. 08. We went thru all the required paper work and he was set for his interview on jan. 09. His interview was in Jordan due to the fact that the Syrian embassy was closed at the time. We got married on Feb. 14, 2006. The woman that was helping us told us not to take our proof to the interview that they would set up a second one to view the proof. So thats what we did. When the officer found out he did not have any proof with him he just kicked him out and told him that his visa was going back to the NVC then to the USCIS for further review. I went back to this woman and told her and all she said was sorry but i can't help you any further. a week later I did contact another lawyer and she immediatly sent out 2 requests to the embassy in Jordan to reinterview him before it was sent back. They told her that it was already on its way back to the NVC then to the uscis. It got to the uscis on march 23, 2009. Then this lawyer had to step down. So I contacted the senator aid and she told me that what they are doing now is a back ground check on my husband and it was up to his government to send it back in a timely manner. its been 120 days since the USCIS had it. Two days ago I found out that they have made a decision and we would recieve it in 2 - 4 weeks. We are hoping that they will give me the chance to show our proof but we are expecting the worse. I have left the states to be with my husband in Syria as 2 and a half years have been very hard and we are ready to start our life together and work on additional proof while we are waiting the USCIS to decide our fate. I have checked into getting residency here and it would take 3 - 6 months. We got married on Feb. 14, 2006.

Do you know if they will send a NOID or NOIR?

His form that he recieved at the consulate just said that it was being sent back for further review. It did have some numbers on it section 212(a) (5)(a) and 9 fam 41.81, N6.5 and when I looked it up it was about labor visa. I had a laywer to even double check and that is what it states. Do you have any suggestions if we could do anything with the fact they send it back stating the labor visa?

1) we did not want to do this in the beginning so i dont have much. i have a stack of emails from maybe february 2007 to present, all my itineraries for going there to see him (3 trips in total in these two years, and i would spend a month or two in each time), some phone cards, no phone records (see my sig below), and over 60+ pics, as well as three to four affidavits from friends and family. that's good enough?

2) we are still clearing through NVC so hopefully once they are done we will be getting an interview date soon enough.

are the people at the embassy kind/polite/mean/annoying/etc?

i really do not, im sorry...im even newer to this than you are :(

and i'm extremely neurotic, i photocopy everything twice and three times and make sure hubby has copies etc etc etc...like now, he's got all the proof for the interview, and i burned all the pics on a cd. the only thing missing was phone records, but ive written a letter explaining why i cant get my phone records and they could call t-mobile to ask for them if they want to. the other stuff is just ridiculous, im really sorry for what you are going through. Inshallah it all works out for the best. (F)
