Few questions. My HUSBAND (we got married on Sunday!!) came here on a K-1 a few weeks ago. We got married two days ago and now need to start taking the next steps...

First question; what do we need to get him a SS number?

Second; I know we need a translation of his birth certificate for several reasons (perhaps to get his ss? to get his driver's license, for his AOS package...). We (stupidly, probably) didn't get an extra translation in his home country and would love to avoid the pain of finding a Russian translator here. Do we ever get back the packet he gave to the embassy in his home country (where we have his birth certificate translated)?

Thanks, Elena

SSN = I-94, Passport w/ visa and the SS-5 application form

We have never needed an original of any document...(other than showing to the embassy). regular photocopy w/ translation has served us each and every time

Anything in the "immigration" file is now PERMANENT, and you will not be getting anything back

Anybody who is competant in both English and Russian/Ukrainian can translate it... does not need to be a "certified" translator... My wife could do it.

Thank you! Does that mean my husband (who is fluent in Russian, Ukrainian & English) could translate it?

first answer: In order to apply for SSN it's to have his passport with visa and I-94. Plus he will fill out the form at the admnistrative office.

second answer: his birth certificate with translations will be needed for AOS package.

I don't know if he can make translation of his BC himself or not. We made it in Ukraine before arrival here.

If it is less than 14 days before his I-94 expires you can go to the SS office and get a SSN. You could have done this the day after he arrived.

No you do not get the packet back. A photocopy of the translation will work for all those purposes (except AOS, they will need an original translation) My wife is a Russian/Ukrainian translator. PM me if we can help.

Theoretically, YES

There is no rule against this. My wife is a translator but does not do her own documents (or our family's) as it is not considered professional. That is her belief and her "rule". There are many translations in the Kiev and Moscow consulates witrh her signature on them, but none of ours. USCIS has no rule against it though.
