SSC has a different 'thing' to it.

Once she's stateside - wait 2 weeks, go into SSA office and file.

The CBP computers had to log her entry into the USA, which then gets xref'd somewhere in the big DOS computer, which then puts out some stuff to the SSA computer.

It's not automatic. If you have ANY ISSUE at the SSA office at the 2 week time tick, DON'T APPLY.

Come back on the 3 week time tick, and try again.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Green card could take more than 3 weeks. Duration and conditions for acquiring a SSN depends on the state that you are in.

Nope, sorry, state doesn't matter.

What does matter, is IF the SSA office you go to , has trained staff that understand hooking into the DOS/USCIS computer system.

MANY don't understand, so it takes admonishment of that 'first level clerk' at the window, to go get a supervisor, sometimes even to have printed regs and docs from the SSA website about 'how to issue a SSN' for immigrants.

Where did you get this concept that 'state matters' for SSA office visitation? I'll suggest to you, strongly, that yer wrong. No No, don't give me anecdotal evidence - I'm not interested...

Hopefully, by now, the OP has gotten into a SSA office and done something (it'sbeen what - 3.5 weeks since his original query??? )

Enough, you only have to say your opinion once. Post a link as substantiation and that is it.

No need to continue with "yer wrong" and "I'm not interested". No one cares.

Thanks for participating at VJ, you have value to add here. But :time:

You are right and the sad part is that according to the clerk who entered my wife's information into the SSA system, it is all self explanatory and the computer system walks you through it. The clerk had never entered social security information for a K-1 before but she said that she had no problems at all as the system told her exactly what was needed and she must have been successful at her first try because my wife received her SS card in the mail 3 days later.

call me dumb

Why go to the SSA office to file?

File for what? I thought that SSN was automatic BUT you have to have checked that you wanted the SSN to be delivered automatic.

I selected automatic on the form (I forget the form numer - yes dumb)

So as a fellow CR1 visa type....do I need to file something?

From what I have read so far, it'#######-and-miss. I also checked that box on DS-230, but will take my wife to the local SSA office if she hasn't received her social security card a couple of weeks after admission. We are in no hurry to get her a job, nor do I need her SSN in order to add her to my health plan, however, it is required for her driver's license in my state.

It really is 'hit or miss'. If she's not gotten a SSC at the end of her first 30 days stateside - you can count it as a 'miss'.

This is NOT something to sweat over -- just take her to the SSA office after 2 weeks from POE date, and start the application there.

Again - if she's NOT findable in the computer THAT DAY, come back 7 days later, try again.

It really is 'hit or miss'. (repeated for emphasis )

gogo - after reading all of yer prior stuff here - you are my new personal hero for 'getting it done'.

also, IMO, the processing of yer casefile, seemingly at every step, is great example of 'how a federal employee can mess up'.

grr.
